The truth needs to be said and put this situation to bed for the best. The worst thing is that the kids are suffering through politics and egos. I would challenge someone of authority to put the facts out there or close this thread before more assumptions are made.

 

If he didn't resign then the way to end it is someone, Starns or JC come out and say it's not true. Most of the time silence or a "no comment" speaks loud and clear.

Why would he want to come back there? Evidently the Mason Co. administration didn't want him either. They wouldn't give him the job at Mason when Wells left. Hard to figure out how such a great coach that is pushing 50 years old could never get a head coaching job. If he was all that great of a coach and person they would have given him the job in a heartbeat at Mason Co. I guess everybody is finding out why now.

Its pretty hard to figure out what your saying, he was given a job at Johnson Central and in his first year guided them to the Boys Sweet 16. If a person is to think this guy can't coach, then I am not sure that person(s) really understands what it takes in being a coach. This guy was a great assistant coach, part of staff and team that won a state championship and runner up the following year and most head coaches will tell you that he/she as the head coach are only as good as their assistants are. This guy has defined both roles(assistant and head coach) pretty darn well. When your head coach and the responsibilities that comes with the territory, you not only have to fight battles on the court but also often off the court. Sadly, but true.

You're still wrong. Who were the kids? I know of one who quit but it wasn't because of he was afraid he wouldn't get to play football. The kid quit because he didn't want to play. He said he hated it and it wasn't fun any more. I get so tired of everyone on here who think they know the low down but really don't. Tell me brother what have your heard. Spill it and I will tell you the real truth. If you don't want to in public PM me. This same boy missed almost all of the passing games this summer because of basketball but nothing was said to the boy from the football staff but guess what happened when this same player missed some summer basketball to attend a football passing league? You guessed it our basketball coach had some issues with it. This same kid played and contributed in every football game the season so it's plain and simple the football coach had no problem with kids playing other sports. As a matter of fact he encourages it. I can tell you about some more players who tried to pull double duty by attending summer basketball and trying to do summer football or summer baseball and guess what happened. They were more or less told that the summer was for basketball only. Ask Johnson Central's baseball coach if he has a problem out of the football coach during spring football. He will tell you no. There are actually more kids that play football and baseball at JC than football and basketball. I can go on and I can name names of kids that were encouraged to play basketball only. So you can see why I get upset when the football staff is blamed for the basketball coach's problems with low turnout.

 

The real question is why does a school as big as Johnson Central only have 11 or 12 basketball players? In football JC dressed about 70 players and actually lost a couple when basketball conditioning started . Coach McCool had a full roster during the volleyball season. Heck, even both soccer teams had full rosters. Coach Wireman has a full roster in girls basketball and I promise you that when baseball and softball starts Coach Hall and McCool will have enough players to play JV. So why is it that the boys basketball program at Johnson Central had to cancel it's freshman schedule and only have six players that play JV? What's causing kids at JC to not want to play basketball when it's obvious that other coaches are not having this problem? The problem is real obvious and it's not because of the football coach or any other coach at the school.

I was just responding to the posts of a couple of other guys. Not saying I like the guy, not saying I dislike the guy. Not saying he can coach, not saying he cant coach. Totally irrevelant to my post. Just questioning why a guy that is so revered by a couple of you guys has never held a head coaching job at this late stage in a career and as to why, if he is so richly qualified to be a head coach, as to why Mason Co. did not give him the job when it was available 3 years ago.

 

 

Last years senior class at JC had a 28-0 record in 8th grade and this years senior class had 24-2 record in 8th grade and were both considered the two best classes to ever enter JC as freshmen. They completely dominated everybody up and down the 15th region for two consecutive years. Could maybe that have had a lot to do with winning the region?

A good assistant coach does not always make a good head coach, and it is commonly known that a good head coach is only as good as the players they have available. One year on the job with a group of kids that made it to the regional semi-finals the previous year does not classify a coach as being able to deveope those kids either just because they finally made it over the hump.

 

Now out of this years senior class there is only 1 player left playing out of the 16 that played as freshmen. The freshmen schedule was cancelled because of not enough freshmen to field a team, and the JV squad barely has enough players to field a team. Listen it doesn't matter if you like him, if I like him, if the admin. likes him, or whoever likes him. It's not us that has to be sold. You have to sell a bunch of 15-18 year old kids . Right now that is not happening.

 

You really think that now that after quitting on his team that he is going to get full backing and respect from everybody from the administration, to the faculty, the community , all the way down to the players? If he felt that he was not receiving full backing or support then there are proper times and channels to address that sort of thing. You dont quit on your team 2 weeks before the district tournament, because you dont like everything going on. As bad as he wants to be and as bad as he thinks he is, HE AINT RICK PITINO.

I can tell you a real good story from two years ago about a kid that tried to play summer baseball for his school and play summer basketball for his school at the same time. This kid was starting on the summer basketball team every game and playing approx. 3 quarters out of that game. Coach Starns decided to have a boosters club meeting for the parents, but also wanted to have the players present. No problem with that, OK? At that time the kids father was also president of the basketball boosters club. Well it just so happens that the schools baseball team had a game this particular night and this player was scheduled to pitch. The head baseball coach asked the basketball coach if it would be alright if the player in question could miss the booster club meeting to pitch(for his school mind you) since it was not a practice or a game that he was missing. Well said basketball coach went off the deep end and in godlike manner proclaimed that from now on the month of June would be for basketball players only at Johnson Central High School. Well the kid proceeded to miss a booster club meeting (for parents) and pitch that night, and then when the next summer basketball game came around he not only did not start that game but never started another game the rest of the summer, and usually only ended up playing about a quarter out of those games. The bad thing about this whole situation is that when a conflict ever arose when both teams played at the same time, this kid always went to the basketball games instead of the baseball games. BTW this kid was also named the area high school baseball player of the year last year, but he still went to the basketball games instead when a conflict arose.

 

Now , you tell me who is causing the problems, and who has made their own bed, and why Starns cant get anybody to play for him? If the basketball coach would co-operate as well as the head football coach and the head baseball coach he might have a little more support , but instead he went the route to arrogantly proclaim that his program would be the centerpiece of Johnson Central athletics.

Well said.. If the #s are down for a particular sport look no further than the coach of that sport. Dont blame it on the other coaches . Starns put himself in this situation and know he has to live with it. The longer he is around the lower the #s will get.

Since Coach Starns has no longer allegedly resigned, Is this thread even relevant now???
