Berea Football: Open Job or No Team?

Featured Replies

Seen on the local paper/richmond register that the football coach was among the budget cuts but also seen some people saying that it could be the program itself.

Saw the school had to cut 1.3 million from their budget and were getting rid of many school programs and teams. Football costs a lot of money to operate. Wouldn't be surprised if with this budget crisis they are having that football goes away for the time being and that is sad.

Berea has for many years struggled to put a competitive team on the field. Their best era was probably the 1970s, when they went a combined 53-51 between 1971-80. It seems like once Madison Southern opened in Berea in the late-80s, the number of players really began to dry up. Kenan McWhorter, Aaron Stepp, and Frank Parks all had some success with the Pirates, but then almost immediately parleyed that into a better job. I'm afraid if the program is cut, it likely won't be back. Maybe a bigger concern is can the school stay open?

Apparently a lot of people got the ax due to budget cuts and their is a walkout happening right now.

I just have a lot of questions from the outside about how the district piled up this deficit, which will unfortunately have a lot of carryover affects for staffing, academic & athletic programs, and academic offerings/supports for students.  As a supporter of independent schools, you cease to be a good option if you have to run everything on a shoe string.

QJob Thomas deserves a ton of credit for his loyalty to his kids and the Berea Football Team. It takes a ton of a special kind of grit to lead kids on the field every Friday Night knowing the cards are stacked against you.
With minimal school support the parents of the kids on the team try to give the team what they can.
Jon could build his resume as an assistant at any number of other area schools and be in a much better position coaching wise. But he remains dedicated to Berea and those kids.
Clearly BIS is a financial wreck but that has been on an off for many many years. The tiny tax base that they do have for revenue is older residential areas of Berea with no real access for growth. But the folks who are committed to Berea love that school and want to be a part of a small Community school. Jon is one of those.
It’s a shame that a guy who is trying to lead kids to be part of the solution and not the problem is one of the ones that takes the fall due to the “misaligned budget” approved and implemented by folks who won’t be hurt by the cuts one bit.

This is definitely sad for the kids and anyone else who cared about the school. I heard about the walkout and it sounded like many, if not all that weren’t affected has zero cares/concerns.

Just saw on the KHSAA job posting site that there is a post for head football coach for Berea. That is exciting news for the school.
