Regional tournament timing?

Featured Replies

I know this has been an odd year scheduling the boy’s and girl’s state tournaments but why are the regional tournaments finishing at such different times?  10 of the regions are finished and 6 are still playing.  You could make an argument that it gives the regions that are finished with their tournament an unfair advantage since they have more time to rest and recover before starting the state tournament.  Is it simply due to the size of the regions?

I assume it is because the NCAA is at Rupp Arena this week.

I also think you could argue that having a game this week vs. having so much time off is an advantage for the teams that are finishing their regionals this week.

If you are one of the 10 finished, it gives you an opportunity to scout the team you'll play in person as opposed to video only.

I understand that.  My question was more about why the different regions aren’t finishing at the same time.

Such a weird setup for the boy's 12th region this year.  Considering Mercer's lack of bench, it would have been a big help to have had some rest between the semifinals and finals.  I have wondered why they decided on this setup.

Again I am just speculating but knowing the Sweet 16 was moved back I can see why some regions decided to delay their tournaments.  In other words, 16 unique people/groups are in charge of 16 regions and they are not all going to come to the same decision.

It was up to the individual regions on the timeline with the KHSAA pushing it back a week. One thing that could have avoided this was moving the season up a week to get it done before the NCAA tournament was in Rupp. Some regions decided to go ahead and finish because so many athletes play Spring Sports. Imagine being a baseball player and missing the 1st two weeks of the season.

Not possible, UK was still playing regular season games the week you are proposing the girls could have played.

Usually the KHSAA is pretty much top down when it comes to dates.  Dead period in the summer, the first day you can start practice, etc.  They decide and everyone has to adapt.

Individual regions made their own decision.  No one should’ve played back to back IMO.  Made zero sense to do so with such a layoff.

But there were no home games at Rupp during the time the girls would be playing. Last home game was on Tuesday.

I agree with not playing back to back but even regions like the 8th, who put it off a week are going back to back.

I would imagine getting players through and on to their spring sports might have played a role in the decision. Tennis has already started matches and baseball starts today. The more teams left in the region, the less games they get to play in their other sports.

I think the state tournament dates are set far in advance of the SEC regular season schedule. UK probably couldn’t guarantee they’d be on the road that weekend.
