Some questions about this Week's AP Top 25 Poll

Featured Replies

I want to see if anyone thinks the same as me that this week's top 25 is a little hard to figure out especially in the top 10.

1) Auburn loses at home and remains #1

2) Duke loses on the road to unranked Clemson and only drops 1 place.

3) Tennessee wins their last 3 games including a 20-point win at Florida and they drop 1 position and are behind Florida.

4) Texas Tech lost on the road to Arizona by 9 and move up 1.

The Tennessee one is especially puzzling.

1) Ranking basketball is difficult.

2) The AP voters have never shown themselves to be reasoned decision makers when it comes to ranking teams.

3) I prefer rankings like Kenpom because I think it does a better job of including all factors, not just the games that happened the previous week.

4) Ranking basketball is difficult!

The AP poll is largely a joke more often than not.

My thoughts  on opening questions.

1) Auburn still the best record in a Power Conference with just a 2nd loss.

2) Voters have seen enough this season that they think Duke is a top 4 team regardless of a one game bobble. After all Cooper Flagg is on the team.

3) Florida looked more impressive beating Auburn than Tennessee did last week. At this point in the season 3 losses always looks better than 4 losses at the top of the rankings.

4) Marquette losing to Creighton dropped them several slots, allowing the six teams right behind them to move up including Texas Tech. My bigger complaint is why Arizona is one spot behind Texas Tech after just beating them and having a very similar record.

If you just watched the entire season to this point with no prior bias to previous rankings, Auburn has looked like the #1 team all season and should be #1, even with recent loss.

Duke has looked good enough to be #2 but it's hard to tell with the ACC being down quiet a bit this season, plus Cooper Flagg.

Alabama has just rolled along with no one paying attention to them (due to Auburn) and has quietly slid up to #2 in AP but to the eye is probably #3. They may not be better than Duke, but it would be a fun game.

Florida has the most impressive win of the year going in to Auburn and winning but that 20 point loss at UT is the worst loss of the top 5 teams probably. I'd put them at #4.

I personally think the Coaches Poll a little better than the AP for this week.

An interesting stat I just heard that Saturday's game between Auburn and Alabama is the first time in SEC history that #1 and #2 teams from the conference have played. Actually the 3 of the top 4 are SEC teams and in the Coaches Poll 1-4 are SEC teams.

That is crazy. They were talking about that last night. I just figured over 100 years of basketball it would've happened at least a couple times.
