Can someone fill me in on the rules of midseason transfers? I’ve just noticed that a player in the region I follow started the season at one school, and logged varsity minutes, is now playing at a different school in the same district on varsity. I think this is the first time I have seen this.

In season transfer vs out of season transfer has no bearing on transfer eligibility. If the student is academically eligible at the receiving school and on pace with credits toward graduation, the KHSAA “one year sit out” decision is based on whether the student meets published exceptions to the transfer by law.  Or if not meeting those published exceptions, has the appeal process to the KHSAA Commissioner resulted in the transfer student being ruled eligible at the new school, whether in season or out of season.

What exceptions are there? It is my understanding the athlete has had no change of residency.

The student is ineligible for one year or until they are eligible for a waiver or on appeal.
Waivers are granted for: Bonafide change in residence by the entire family, Divorce, Change in Custody, Parent Death, Boarding School, Ending of school program, or Anti-Bullying.  They will be automatically denied eligibility if they do not meet one of these waivers.  After that, they can request an appeal to a hearing officer under their special circumstances on why they should be eligible.

I know of a player in the same situation described above (maybe the same player). He had a really nice game last night and helped his new team win a tight game. The player I’m referring to has transferred 3 times and he’s a junior.

There needs to be controls on this type of behavior.

I am referring to a young man playing in the 8th region. Fits the exact bill you’re referencing (3rd school, Junior). I also know he played middle school ball at a different school than he started high school at. Agreed there needs to be some kind of regulation.

Did a little digging and apparently that school district has a ONE time inter county transfer rule once a kid is in HS.

I am not sure how this squares with KHSAA eligibility requirements though.

 

This is a slippery slope to me.  Midseason transfers can be legit for legit reasons, but more often it's because they don't like the coach, playing time, see an opportunity to create a super team etc.  

This is happening more frequently, and I think is unfair to the other teams that finish with what they start with.

I get why people would be opposed to transfers during the season. On the other hand, I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the kids, especially out of season.
 

Athletes aren’t the property of the school. Kids that participate in other extra curricular activities can transfer at any time and participate in those activities without restriction. Including some that are competitive in nature. Why should athletics be held to a different standard? They only have 4 years and should be able to enjoy their time.

Anyone who has followed Ballard basketball over the last 20+ will acknowledge the roster “creativity” sometimes employed by its former coach. Perhaps that same creativity has come to Buckner?

The newest player on the roster is on his third high school in 2 1/2 years?  Impressive!

While I agree with your sentiment what about the boy/girl that loses playing time when the new transfer comes in?

He/She has worked and sweated with their teammates the whole season (and likely preseason conditioning) all to earn playing time. 
 

Then it’s taken by a kid who did none of that with their teammates?

 

Mid season transfers should NOT happen!
