Russell just drilled Rowan by 29 on Friday. Which proves?

 

They had a hiccup tonight vs Ironton a team that soundly beat the Tomcats

Ashland is a much different team right now.

 

Ellioot is on a bit of a roll, but losses to Raceland and East prove that they can also be a little complacent. Elliott is a much different team right now

 

I think these three teams have separated themselves a little from the rest of the region at this point, but others could spring an upset come March There's no unbeatable teams in the 16th region. Anything can happen in the tournament.

I just think if Russell is playing well they will be very hard to handle.

Their narrow loss to Mason proves that point well.

Ashland vs GRC will be a great measuring stick for the Tomcats Friday night. A team very close to the Mason County Royals.

Ironton is not a great team but they are 10-5.

They are very well-coached and had a great defensive game plan tonight against Russell.

How many Class A schools has Elliott beaten in that span?

I love the Elliott team and their style of play. The final week of regular season matchup with Russell should be a dandy.

GottaRebound-I generally agree with you but I think the Ironton loss will only serve to refocus Russell.I look for a very solid effort by Russell against Greenup Co. Friday night.

 

Just a side note-Ironton which is not having that great of a year has beaten(double figures) what are arguably the two best teams in the region(Ashland/Russell).Does this say anything about the 16th region?

 

Russell really hasnt peaked , I was seeing how many people were still up.

On serious note, it seems that over the last three years that there aare always some distractions on this team. This is a team that can play and beat anyone when they show up to play. Cant look back on last year, and think it is going to be easy, not saying that the kids are doing that either, what I am getting at is that you have to be mentally focused night in and night out, no matter if you are shooting bad, you still have to find a way to win. I wish them well, just dont know what team is going to show up. You know what I mean? Boyd and Fairview is consistent on their play and minset, Russell and Ashland have too many ups and downs, even when they win you look back and think things could have been done differently.

The region is another story within itself...things have changed over the years but the future looks bright again for the region

Ah, they can only play what their schedule allows. It will be interesting to see if Russell can stop Elliott's offense when they play again.

From about 1984 - 2002, I personally thought that those years were the worse years for Basketball overall in the region. Dont get me wrong there were great great players to come out of that time but I am speaking of overall parity. During those years there were some very good teams but only 2 or 3 in the region. Parity always makes the region more fun and interesting to watch. I mean other than going to watch OJ dunk, who really wants to go watch that team play a local team and beat them by 60. I would much rather watch teams of equal ability go head to head.

I can name some really good teams in that era Ashland, East, West, Boyd, Greenup, Russell etc.....Boyd and Greenup were powers back then.

Yeah, I see your point but I think the last two years that teams have been improving. As for the teams you mentioned in that time era, they were good but not compared to the previous 20 years, say...1960-82, and no I am not living in the past or comparing teams, just the parity of it. I personally think that for the 16th region some of its best years were from 1974-1982. Some might argue that fact but that is just MO, and no I did not play in that time, only watched.

1976-78 Lewis County teams won three straight district titles and played the great '77 Ashland team a solid game in region semis.

Elliott County led by Rocky Adkins were also good those three years but could not win the 62nd.

You seem to really know your basketball in this area, thats great, finally someone who knows some history about the game. Its funny how once you build a Mall and bring in 10 screen Movie theaters, kids decide to no longer play 8-10 hours a day, at the park, projects, public pools, and etc. I know there are that few...Vanhoose, Barker, and some others that work, but IMO that is why ball is down, kids no longer play in the off season. I remember growing up that so many people played ball that even play ground players were as good as the starters...maybe we can get it back to that..

Elliott also has a recent loss to a good but by no means great South Charleston team. It is very comparable to the loss Russell suffered at Ironton. I'm not sure a narrow loss tonight by Russell jumps Elliott ahead of them.

Nothing like Ashland fans going back to ancient wins again. Dust off the national championship trophy boys.

I believe Coach Dodd has a sparkling record versus Ashland in his tenure.

I didnt bring it up, I just provided some info. Nothing like those from a school who have never won anything to speak of, diminishing the accomplishments of those who have. :thumb:
