Not going off number Oscar's game translates well into today's game. He was a swing man who liked the ball in his hands and was better with the ball in his hands. He was fundamental to a T and talented to a T!!!

The best players find ways to win championships. Oscar Robertson only did it once. The Lakers were able to beat the great Celtic team in the 80s for Championships and vice versa. The best NBA players are the guys who get it done on the biggest stage. When Oscar Robertson won an NBA title he was playing 2nd fiddle to Kareem.

You can talk about stats all day long. But any great basketball mind will tell you than numbers are good, but championships is what its all about.

3rd in East in 62/63. Took Celtics to 7 games in East finals. Triple double season.

2nd in East in 63/64. Lost in 5 to Celtics in East finals.

2nd in East in 64/65. Upset by 76ers in Semis. MVP.

3rd in East in 65/66. Lost to Celtics in Semis. Had a 2 game to 1 lead but Celtics won last 2 games in best of 5 series.

3rd in East in 66/67. Lost to 76ers in Semis.

New coach in 67/68. Missed playoffs. Turmoil begins.

Turmoil swells in 68/69. New ownership getting antsy and making bad player and front office decisions. Miss playoffs again.

69/70 Bob Cousy comes in and trades Jerry Lucas for Jim King and Bill Turner (who?). Tried to trade Oscar, but Big O nixed the deal. Team falls apart and Oscar is traded at the end of the season.

70/71 wins Title.

 

The Celtics as a team dominated the decade, but the awful Big O had them on the verge of elimination twice. If you have a Top 5 team without Oscar, it's clear to me you know little about his game and are going only off numbers. How many times have you actually seen footage of him playing the game???

 

I have seen Robertson play on ESPN Classic twice. Hey, I was impressed by him. He had a mythotical style, he would continuously back his man down. He was a great decision maker, passer, etc. I think hes a great player, but I just dont think he is a top 5 player. I would have to put 6 guys above him in my mind. Jordan, Bird, Magic, Kareem, Russell, and Chamberlin.

 

Also, in the rundown of what all of Robertson's teams did, in the 9 years he was in Cinncinatti, they had 5 good years and 4 mediocre or bad years. You can cry controversy or whatever you want, Robertson never got it done. And in my mind, I just dont think hes as great as the other guys.

Hey Im in my 20s. I wasnt around. But based on what I saw in those games, and different highlights, I seen a very good NBA player. I just dont see him being better than the guys I have mentioned. Sorry, I know it upsets you because he played at Cinncinatti for most of his basketball life and all that, but winning=greatness.

You do realize there were 9 to 15 teams in the NBA so it wasn't as watered down. He was drafted in to a bad franchise and was great. He won a title. He won MVP. Did you ever consider Kareem had the numbers he did because he was playing with a legend? Notice how his numbers declined a year after Oscar retired, and then kept going down? And Kareem was only 28 at that point. If he played in a 20-30 team NBA he wouldn't be playing the greatest dynasty in American sports history 4 or 5 times a month. I know this is hard for you to grasp, but as the #1 pick in 1960 Oscar was drafted into a bad franchise and made them respectable and a contender for the title. He never got past Boston. Not many did. That changes NOTHING in the fact that he's one of the best 5 basketball players ever...

Great argument. Sorry I hurt your feelings when I mentioned how bothered you were that I was giving someone from Cinncy a hard time. Look you can score 70 points a game, but if you dont win its absolutely pointless. Oscar Robertson did not win like some of the better players of all time. Also dont you think players were better in the 80s than in the 70s?

Dont you think playing against Moses Malone, Bernard King, Dominique Wilkens, Isaiah Thmas, Hakeem Olijawon, etc, etc, was a little tougher competition than most of the players in the 60s?
