Snow Games (or other extreme weather)

Featured Replies

This afternoon I watched the NFL's YouTube channel release a Top 10 worst weather games in NFL history and was curious about the anomalous weather experiences with high school football in the Bluegrass. I don't believe I have ever witnessed a snow game in Kentucky, but I am sure there have been a good amount of them that the general public on here have witnessed.

What are some snowy or other wild weather games that some of you all have been to here in Kentucky?

1969.

Mayfield vs Madisonville. I was 10 years old and Mayfield beat Madisonville in the snow in a playoff game. Madisonville had Sonny Collins one of the best running backs in the history of Kentucky High School football.

State Championship Game in Bowling Green at WKU.  2013 between Belfry and Wayne County, played in Sleet, Freezing Rain and just flat out cold. Belfry won on a FG in the 3rd Quarter if I remember correctly final 3-0.

I believe it was 2002 after Boyle beat Rockcastle County at the old fairgrounds in Louisville that the State 4A game between Trinity and Male it snowed pretty bad covering the field.  This was the Bush vs Brohm championship game.

Mayfield also played Beechwood in 2002 in the snow at the fairgrounds and they were also in the 2013 State Championship game at WKU in 2013.

Yes. It snowed a lot leading up to the weekend. I remember snow piled all around the outside of the field at the Friday afternoon Class AA game between Breathitt and Corbin. The sun was out, but it was freezing cold.

Photo credits to SM Lynch Photography. In 2012 Whitley County played at Somerset for a homecoming game and it was a foggy and murky mess. Not quite the Philly/Chicago Fog Bowl but was similar. Whitley won that game and it was not a fun night for the purple and gold. Very chippy just as the 2011 game in Williamsburg was.

Was trying to find pics of 2011 Somerset at Perry Central on a sloppy muddy field on a sleety late October night. Couldn't find them though. Final was 7-3 Perry.

Some say the greatest high school football game ever.

No snow in the game, however. But it was very cold.

I remember the 1987class 1-A state semi finals when Pikeville played at Beechwood. The temperature was around zero. The wind coming off the Ohio river was so powerful! The Pikeville sports writer's ballpoint pen literally froze up. Never been to a football game that cold, ever! But the good thing was Pikeville left Beechwood with a 52-28 win.

Some have said the Mayfield/Ocath championship game last year was just as good as the Bush/ Brohm game!  Thoughts from some people that were at both?

That was one of the coldest games I have ever been to! Pikeville was on fire that night! They were up 28-0 in the 1st qtr.

That was 1-A smashmouth football back in those days.

Yes it was! Pikeville dominated us for those 3 years! We all know what happened after 1989. ??

I was at both and both were great games. I'm sure nostalgia plays a role in my saying Trinity/Male was the better game. For me, the fact that everyone in the stadium knew Brian Brohm and Michael Bush were NFL-caliber players and they both just kept making insane plays made it all the more better. That's probably the biggest difference for me when comparing Trinity/Male to Mayfield/Owensboro Catholic.

Lol! That is out of discussion?
