It seems to me that most of the problems with huge margin of victories is the lack of scoring by the losing team. When lbc says she got beat 50-1, the problem is the lack of scoring by the weaker team. A far superior team can do some things to give the weak opponent a chance to score. Some teams call off the press, but still half court trap. Pulling back off the trap but still playing man to man. Others go to zone but still play aggressive and intercept passes. I choose to play 2/3 zone, 1 foot in the paint, allow the team to shoot and work on defensive positioning and rebounding.--then on offense -reverse the ball and take the open shot.

 

The losing team needs to recognize also how to shorten this type of game. No silly fouls that stop the clock, do not stop playing hard, but being overly aggressive when an opponent has pulled off only can make things worse.

Everyday in our practices we practiced aggressive physical defense. Anyone didn't do that and they were corrected in multiple different ways. We had drills to ingrain it in them. When they stepped on the floor, it wasn't a thought but a reaction. It was natural.

 

And then a game comes along and you are up 30 points in the 3rd quarter and you expect them to turn that switch OFF that you have drilled and taught and coached and drilled them on for 4 years. The switch that they automatically don't have now because you have coached it out of them and they now only know ONE way to play defense.

 

I am not saying not to do it but saying it is very hard. Game is going on and there is a struggle for the ball and that reaction takes back over and they are gone and then they realize where they are again. Very hard for a competitive player to do without plain quitting.

 

I was in a game once and we were in a 2-3 zone and up by 50. And they kept trying to feed the ball to a certain position with us standing a foot from the offensive player. The pass would come on the defensive player's side about 6 inches from my defensive player. She stole it 6 straight times. Was I to tell her to not steal the pass that was 6 inches from her? BTW, it was one of the bottom of the roster players.

 

That game and how that score finished out with us winning by close to 70 bothers me as much as games where we should have won and lost. But honestly, I don't know what else we could have done to keep the game closer besides telling our players to purposely turn the ball over.

 

I always tried to have a play that we didn't run well or work on alot to use that time to work on it. Maybe it was to try and get a post player to look and seek the ball. So our focus was for a freshmen post player to be the only player to shoot and we would concentrate on a play for them. Or maybe against a zone it was using the baseline cutter more and we were going to only get shots out of that set from that cutter. Use the time as a glorified scrimmage to work on specific aspects of the game, offensively.

Absolutely correct. This goes to show that there is plenty of blame to go around. I think, however, that the lion's share belongs to the team on top. And it isn't the first time for this team this year.

 

I attended the Mason County-St. Patrick girls game last night. The score at the end of the first quarter was 28-6. Multiply by four and you have a 112-24 game; with an 88-point margin of victory.

 

The game ended at 77-29. While St. Pat didn't score many more than the "extrapolated" 24 points, Mason County didn't come anywhere near scoring 112; in fact, the second half scoring went something like Mason County 33-16.

 

And according to the post-game report on the radio, the girls spent quite a bit of time on the court after the game talking - they pretty much all know each other.

All it takes is an injury to one of the big 3 for the season hopes to go down.. Up that much I doubt any starter would play the 4th.. Just my opinion though

There were 3 starters in for MC at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

 

This has been a concern of mine as well. Whether up by 40 or down by 25, Mason tends to play its starters an awful lot. The point I was making in the previous post is that the score can be managed. Whether using all, some, or no starters late in the game.

Yes, it can be managed and in this case it seems it should have been. There are things you can do as a coach to keep this from happening.

I was at the game, Coach Adams really didn't try to run the score up on Beth Haven. A few facts that need to be known about the game. Beth Haven only had 8 girls, 4 of whom were in high school, 2 of those girls in high school were injured and could not play. BH started 4 girls who were 12 years old. During the 2nd quarter one of BH's girl was injured and could not return so he had only 5 players. Coach Adams did play his starters off and on throughout the game, but really they did a better job of managing the score than his bench players. Hart got alot of layups but they were all off of long rebounds, but when they ran their offense they took outside shots. It should also be noted that Hart's subs shot the ball exceptionally well, they hit quite a few outside shots. I was more disappointed with Hart's fans than I was with the players or the coaching staff. Some of Hart's parents would yell at the officials when a foul was called against Hart or they let a walk or a double dribble go when BH did that.

Exactly, they were some of the worse fans I have ever had to listen to at a high school game.

I was on the end of a shellacking this weekend. Beat something like 50-1. There were times that there was a long rebound and the other team would grab it and take off (talking 9-10 year old boys here) and the coach, not wanting to run the score up, would be telling them to pull up.

 

They would be 20-25 feet in front of us, (absolutely much quicker than us at every position), pull up and wait for us to catch up, set up on defense and then run their offense. It was a terrible, terrible feeling.

 

If anyone thinks that having teams pass up WIDE OPEN shots from 2-3 feet or fast break layups, makes this a better situation is fooling themselves. From experience this past weekend, it made my players nor myself feel better for them to not shoot the layup.

 

In fact, it had the exact opposite effect. When the other team quit playing hard, my team quit playing hard which even more compounded the situation.

 

There is a difference between pushing the ball up the court intentionally and getting a long rebound with nothing but the open court. There is no way that there was that many rebounds bounce long for the score to get like this. I agree with what you are saying about the other team passing up bunnies but this game had to have unnecessary fastbreaks in it, which is what I was referring to.:thumb:
