Street takeovers becoming a problem in Louisville

They did the same thing in Cincinnati. They had the same flags also.

Is that a Mexican flag?

What is the rationale for doing this?   Are the participants trying to send some kind of idealogical message?   Are they just doing it for thrills?   Or to show disrespect for authority and law-abiding citizens wanting to use the public streets?  Louisville has an ordinance by which their vehicles can be seized and impounded for 6 months, and I believe over 20 vehicles have been seized within the last month or so.   After 6 months, I wonder if the vehicle owner will have to pay an impoundment or storage fee to get the vehicle back.

I think so. There was a bunch of them downtown with that flag. Not sure what that is all about.

They seized a bunch that night. The takes overs are pretty stupid. They love burning high dollar tires off.

Because they can.

As society pushes the police back this is just one more thing you will see in response.

I heard the ones with Mexican flags were celebrating Mexican independence day so like our July 4th.

They was big time Sunday night.

From Louisville Metro Police Department on Facebook:

BUSY WEEKEND FOR LMPD:
LMPD seized 14 cars this weekend due to street takeovers. Some of the pictured vehicles acted as "blockers" so motorists can slide on both public and private property.
Last night, LMPD had actionable intelligence that street takeovers were imminent, and we created a detail to combat the offenses. Takeovers started off in the 8600 block of Preston Highway. Motorists were observed spinning out and firing celebratory gunfire from their vehicles into the air.
The next location was the 6200 block of Preston Highway in the "Goodwill" lot. We estimated thousands of people in the lot; some doing burnouts, sliding, and spinning. It took LMPD about an hour to shut this down utilizing Division resources from all across the department.
The final location was the parking lot next to Slugger Field. LMPD seized multiple vehicles and made multiple arrests.
Sunday:
10 Vehicles towed in total with 7 seized under the ordinance
2 Handguns
3 DUI arrests
1 Felony warrant served
1 Felony arrest
4 Citations related to Reckless Driving

They have been doing takeovers in Cincinnati for a while and the police haven't done much about it. I was stuck behind one on 71 one night it was pretty crazy.

I saw one in downtown Cincy a year or two ago.  No police around either, and that was downtown.

LMPD seems to be much more aggressive in breaking these up than several other large cities across America including Cincinnati.  Kudos to them and their city administration for taking this stance.
