  • theguru changed the title to JV Game / AM Practice

That sounds right to me CS but I also think it is an art and a science.  I never played a snap in a JV game but even after some varsity games I was ready to go the next morning.  Other times I needed two or three days off.  So, how do you make it a choice without any feeling that it is an obligation.  I don't know the answer to that question.

Not necessarily a right or wrong answer, every situation is different, the biggest one is being numbers in the program. If you are able to let 15-30 kids off for the day and still have the ability to get a 22 man look within your varsity, I understand why you would do that. I would’ve had them boys out there personally, 14-16 year olds, they would’ve been just fine at practice. Not like us when we exert a little too much energy and need a week to fully recover.

Tough question and to me goes a little deeper than the question.

Positive Side:  If you (coaching staff) have put in the work at a program that has a great culture around it, I would let those players have the option to practice.  This would allow those that are in good physical condition to keep that strong and those that got nicked up the night before to sit out, but still be there.  Lot of power behind team bonding with things like this.

Negative Side:  If you are not at a program that promotes cultural/bonding/positive experience in your program, players likely look for any and every opportunity to not come.  It's A LOT to be on a high school football team.  It's pretty much year round.

So, I'd say it's a coach's decision, but I would prefer to build that culture where the players want to come to practice and participate whether they had a game the night before or not.

Appreciate those of you that participated in our poll. Those guys were back at practice at 6 am this morning.  In the short term, it would have been good to have them Tuesday. In the long term, our Frosh/JV doubleheaders are critical to develop players for the future of the program. We made player development the priority but also didn't want to get those kids to banged up. If we can keep our team healthy, our chances improve significantly to be the best we can be.

Our tough topic this week is stepping through on the throw for QBs. Will be a good one and hope you guys will join us, Thursday, 7:30 pm!

Varsity usually play Friday night and JV gets some plays sometimes and then plays Saturday morning.

Many, if not most areas JV plays on Mondays. Northern Kentucky is the only place I've ever been that regularly plays JV games on Saturdays. Saturday was always a film/lift day for varsity/JV.
