5A Southwestern (0-1) at 5A South Warren (2-0)

Good game here with 2 teams that just started playing last season where South Warren traveled to “The Reservation” and pulled out a closer than the score might indicate 46-28 offensive shootout.  South had almost 550 yards offense in this game while the Warriors had nearly 375 yards total offense.  Bryce Button (240 passing yards, 63 rushing yards and 3 TDs) and Jimmy Sales (189 yards rushing and 1 TD) had huge games for the victors.   The Warriors were led by QB Collin Burton with 177 yards passing and 1 TD and Kaeden Flores with 76 rushing yards and 1 TD. 

Southwestern Information

The Warriors come into this game off their BYE Week, which is pretty darn early in my book, but scheduling is a tough business to be in for sure.  They certainly drew a tough assignment in their opening game of the year at the Forcht Bank Bowl in Campbellsville playing a better than you think North Hardin team at 3:00 pm in the blazing heat two Saturdays ago.  Although, Southwestern fell 14-0; their defense only yielded 13 yards rushing.  Problem was they gave up 228 yards passing.  BUT they forced 3 North Hardin INTs, so it wasn’t all bad.  I really don’t know the circumstances of the 2 North scores, but again not a terrible showing from Southwestern.  But I’m sure they are chomping at the bit to get back on the field and get that setback in the rear-view mirror.

South Warren Information

South Warren comes into this game, which is their home opener, on the heels of 2 pretty good performances against 2 solid teams.  SR Team Leader and QB Bryce Button has been outstanding to start the year. He went 11 for 16 for 118 yards and 2 TD passes against an overmatched Ballard team.  And he put his offense on his back last night running the ball in on 3^rd and 11 from the Hendo 40 with just over a minute to play to extend South’s lead to the final score of 43-33 South Warren. 

Although the Spartan defense did lose some excellent football players, they are still a very formidable unit as evidenced by giving up zero points against Ballard.  But Henderson QB Trajdon Davis made some plays on the South defense they will have to shore up going forward.   

Game Preview and Information

This game will be played at South Warren High School’s grass field, although South is slated to get a new turf field sometime in the relatively near future.  Game time is 7:00 pm.  Game time forecast:  77 degrees and beautiful outside!

I look for South to continue to rely on QB Bryce Button to make the big plays to keep South out front.  As it appears the Warriors have good run stopping abilities, South may go to a pass-first scheme in this game to take advantage of what may work best against Southwestern.

For the Warriors, South wants to stop the run and they usually sell out to do that and are good at it.  I have seen teams use the pass to set up some run success, but I have seen few teams just line up and run right at the Spartans and have any luck at all.

I think it will be close early; but just feel Button is the difference maker and South prevails, but not by alot.

Mainly because I don’t see Southwestern scoring. 

If Southwestern couldn’t score on North Hardin who just gave up 52, it’s hard for me to see them scoring on South Warren.

While I don't disagree with you on the whole, I don't think many expected Henderson County to lead South 23-18 at the half and give up 33 points to the Colonels either.

Haven't gotten to watch the South Warren/Henderson Co. game but the score surprised me.  North Hardin is inconsistent and undisciplined but they can be dangerous.  I think South Warren wins this one and may do it comfortably, but the Henderson County score was interesting. 

Very peculiar matchup. 

I would venture to say that every team on the Warriors schedule will have a hard time scoring. Southwestern just has to find a way to move the ball which will be a very hard task against the South Warren front 7 as they are legit.
