I agree, don't follow scores or what even went well.  When I was coaching high school, I would use 7 on 7s to really experiment on both sides of the ball.  Defensively, I would purposely put my guys i

I suppose I am old school, but why in the world would WE travel 2.5 hours to go throw some football?

To me 7v7 is the beginning of a long process that basically goes near year around now (football season).  To take your team to a 7v7 competition you (Warren East in this example) could just ask Greenwood or South or someone closer to participate with.  As someone said above, it is not about winning the tournament; it is about getting chemistry with your WRs against DBs that you won't likely see ever again and vs versa for the DBs.  It's not the same as a practice.

A step further is the bus trip over; hanging out between games; enjoying winning plays with your teammates and going through losses and poor plays as well.

To me, getting this process going early on in the year before you really get the pads going gets your team more acclimated to the new season with a brand new team.

I have heard a lot of coaches say they get more out of just getting teams together to throw in a practice like setting than going to a tournament.  When the word "tournament" gets used people want to win its just the nature of sports but teams tend to run defensive coverages that in a game on Friday night would allow the other team to rush for 300+ yards.  That typically won't win you a lot of football games.  When you get a practice like throwing session you can coach your players more and you tend to see traditional zone coverages and more man-free instead of teams running 2-man stuff.

Again nothing wrong with a competition and the team building that takes place on the bus rides and just kids getting out and competing against other schools.  I've just heard coaches prefer on over the other.

@Purple88 That’s a fair assessment, I look at the group they’re in and I’m not sure how competitive it’ll be and what work they’ll legitimately get from playing some of the smallest schools in the state. I believe the financial part of it doesn’t add up, especially with the plethora of talent surrounding them and not having to go lengths to have a competitive environment. Could’ve just asked Caverna or Russellville to come out Louisville rd if you wanted some feel good moments. I will say that’s a valid point on the topic of building camaraderie.

Whoever made that statement lied through their teeth, if all that was cared about was gaining chemistry you wouldn’t need the validity of traveling a long distance to win an off season throwing championship. Would’ve just done what has been done for years and invite the local area schools to come compete, especially at WE where the facilities are very elite.

I'm not saying I'm 100% right, but I think both sides have some merit (plus - comradery and chemistry; vs. negative - cost, just stay home).

It also depends on your team.  If your Scott County, who runs 80% of the time; you really don't need it.  But if you throw as much as most passing teams do, I think it helps your QB/WRs find timing/rhythm and other type things.

It isn't Friday Night football.  Not trying to go there.  It's just a part of some's comprehensive program.  I know some programs that look forward to competing in them.  But you don't get a State Championship for them.

Lorenzen looks good throwing the ball against Holy Cross.

Beechwood VS SK both teams scored at will. Both teams need work on defense.

Beechwood looked a little bit better vs Highlands tonight than they did on Tuesday, I might have missed one but I don’t believe SK reached the end zone once against the birds , just couldn’t seem to establish any rhythm.  Very nice to see the numbers Bellevue had on their sideline and to see the kids competing, good job Coach Montgomery.

It’s flag football without flags and a pass rush…I wouldn’t read into it much more than that. 7 on 7 is great for getting the QB’s and receivers in rhythm. Sure, there are some coverage issues you can correct but it’s still nothing like a real football game. All of the teams involved seemed to be getting lots of younger players experience too which is great.

I would agree with that , not the biggest fan of 7 on 7 myself . With that said it’s still a competition and I was taking tonight for what it was. Beechwood was without Fryman tonight which I’m certain would help , A LOT, he’s definitely a difference maker !!! I just wasn’t impressed with Simon Kenton at all , offensively or defensively. The games were all varsity until the last 5 minutes and I know highlands played JV vs HC and Bellevue the whole game so yes a lot of young kids got a lot of work, which is great.
