Ohtani to the Dodgers

Frankly, I think that’s insane and I’m fairly confident will not be worth it. For one, all he is right now is a DH for the coming season. Second, he’s already 30, and contracts like this typically go bad because of their length. Third, I am really not sure what we’ll see from him in terms of pitching long term. He’s already had multiple arm surgeries.

He’s very good but $700 million is just absurd.

Just looked it up, the Dodgers just signed a 25 year cable TV deal for $8.35 Billion or around $335,000,000 per year. They get an additional $60,000,000 per year (as does every team) from the MLB national contract.

The current predictions have the Dodgers payroll coming in at around $250,000,000 this season. So they are $140,000,000 in the black before they sell one ticket, t-shirt or Dodger Dog.

The numbers are just crazy!!!

This like all of these big contracts are about winning now and worrying about the last few years of the deal when it comes. And with continued rising salaries, these deals don't look so bad just a few years later. Just look at Bryce Harper. Now only the 7th highest paid player in baseball and falling.

Ohtani working with Dodgers to help with luxury tax and being able to pay other players.

I read that in real world money that even though he'll be paid his $700 million, that in today's dollars paying ten years from now the Dodgers will feel a significant savings.

Brilliant stuff from Ohtani. Of COURSE it happens for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are having a press conference with Shohei Ohtani in the next few minutes on ESPN and the MLB Channel.

That’s actually brilliant.

Shades of Bobby Bonilla.
