Somerset got off to a good start in this game.  What happened?

Somerset scored 21 points early, then Perry County Central clawed back scoring 22 in a row.

Penalties by Somerset absolutely killed them.

Two untimely penalties on PCC erased a huge kickoff return by Somerset and one late erased a game winning FG. Somerset had 155 yards in penalties.

Yeah, that'll get you beat every time.

On the blocked field goal, did the ball cross the line of scrimmage?  If not, Somerset should have been able to advance it.

That is the hundred thousand dollar question.

Winning FG attempt is blocked, recovered by the holder who runs it in for a Touchdown...but the Refs blew it dead on the block, thus ending the game.

Mistake by the refs right? Or is there some high school rule that says you cannot advance a blocked place kick? I never heard of that rule if there is one.

However, I will add, he isn't running that in for a TD if the refs don't blow the whistle. He would have been tackled quickly.

One other comment. I know nothing of the situation - down, time, what happened on the plays leading to the kick, etc.

That said, never rely on a place kick to win the game for you. Too many things can go wrong. Do everything you can to score the TD. Far too often I see coaches play for what they think is a sure kick only to see something like this happen.

Again, I don't know the situation here. Just making a general comment and sharing my opinion.

2 secs on the clock, kicking team down 1. Previous play was a made FG from 5 yards further out, but at the snap a flag came out against the defense. So kicking team moves up 5 yards closer and defense gets another chance to stop the winning kick.

I agree, the holder that recovered the ball may not have made it in for a TD if the refs don't blow it dead. But we'll never know.

Other than RPI, this game means little.

The thing is, if the referee blows a scrimmage kick, that doesn't pass the line of scrimmage dead, before it is recovered by the defense, or the recovering player tackled, it is an inadvertent whistle and the down just be replayed. The kicking team can absolutely advance a blocked kick that does not go past the line of scrimmage. Somerset should have gotten a third attempt on an untimed down. Maybe they hit it, maybe not.  But the game should have continued.

The ball clearly did not cross the line of scrimmage on the kick. So inadvertent whistle should have allowed Somerset another play.

Even if the ball crosses the LOS, if it ends back behind the LOS untouched by the kicking team, the kicking team could advance it still. This at worst should’ve been an inadvertent whistle. Look the crew was caught in a first time for me situation.
