Notably, there will be no more one-and-one. Instead, a common foul will result in two free throws if a team is in the “bonus”. Furthermore, a team will enter the bonus after 5 team fouls and it will reset every quarter.

Not a very well thought out rule change. Sounds like it was proposed by a team that couldn’t knock down 1 and 1 ft’s. 

I like the change. College women play this way. Gives a reset instead of teams spending entire quarters in the double bonus and teams needing to foul 5+ times to get the bonus at the end. Makes coaches have more strategy handling foul trouble as well.

Yeah, I don't mind this rule change either.  Sure, losing the 1+1 takes some strategy/pressure out of things but I think the game moves a bit quicker, especially when the fouls reset.

I wish men's college basketball moved to the women's model of 4 10-minute quarters + this foul system.  The NIT did it in 2018 (which is when WKU made their Final Four run there) and I loved it.

If going to this rule, women play ten minute quarters and NBA plays 12 minute quarters as both have the same rule of 5 fouls per quarter for the bonus. High School is only 8 minute quarters, outside of shooting fouls there will rarely be free throws until the fourth quarter when a team is attempting to foul.

This has been voted on for the past several years on the NFHS questionnaire sent to coaches at the end of each season.

Still a dumb rule. Most coaches probably never responded to that question because they didn’t think that rule change was possible. Change for the sake of change.

It’ll help 2 groups of people. Teams that can’t shoot free throws. They can now better protect a lead. And it’ll also help the scorekeepers that struggle counting higher than 5.

I can see the benefits as well to the most aggressive defensive team because fouling early in the half they will receive a fresh start for the second part of the half. Alongside my aforementioned point of 5 fouls resulting in the bonus in an 8 minute quarter, aggressive defensive teams can be extra aggressive because the penalty won't come quite as often, for a team to get to five fouls without doing so for an end the game situation they would have to have a high foul to possession ratio. When the penalty does come, it won't happen until very late in the quarter, again rewarding teams to be more aggressive because they may only get penalized a minute or two at the end of the quarter.

Personally if going to this rule, I see it would have made better sense if it was four fouls for the bonus since the quarters are eight minutes in length rather than five fouls like the NCAAW where their time frame is ten minutes. 

I like the rule change.  I'm not sure why we feel that the offense should be penalized (old 1-and-1 rule) for being in the lead.  This also helps games finish quicker when a team racks up fouls in the 3rd quarter it isn't a free throw show in the 4th.

This rule has not been adopted in Kentucky yet.  The NFHS just allowed state associations to make the change if they wish.
