So what will it take for this game to be canceled and never played again?  At this point discussions need to be had on whether or not to continue this series.

No.  Reed Sheppard backed out.  If the best we have to offer are refusing to play then what is the point of this lopsided series?  It can’t be profitable is it? 

They should strip him of the Mr. Basketball award in my opinion. If your not going to play and be on the team then should not be Mr. Basketball.

I definitely think that's something worth making you question it. This game has been played in the summer months since at least the 1960s, so the change would appear to be the fact that the demand of the college programs has increased - especially when you look at how many college sports are now pushing for freshmen to graduate from high school early in order to be on campus at the college in spring to start workouts and practices with the team at that point rather than in the summer, as they traditionally have.

I do think it's interesting, though, that Indiana's roster appears to have more players with big-time D1 program commitments, and yet they are still planning on playing in the high school all-star game.

The shift in methods and practices by the college programs certainly makes you have to wonder if the All-Star game should look to pivot and change up its traditional schedule. But at the same time, why does this not appear to be such an issue for Indiana players while Kentucky had its Mr. Basketball, Reed Sheppard, drop off the roster late in the process and had one of the stronger Mr. Basketball contenders in Evan Ipsaro decline to even take place in the All-Star game in the first place?

It most certainly SHOULDN’T tell you all you need to know!

Each case is different. Did UK (Cal) ask Reed to back out because they have games in the summer representing the USA? Did Reed make the decision on his own, looking out for HIS career? Is there an injury we don’t know about? 
 

Any number of things could have prompted this decision. You don’t KNOW who, what, when and or why it was made.

There was an article out saying that he was checking into his dorm on Wednesday to begin building chemistry with the team on and off the court.  
 

Oh, and he was concerned about missing academic orientation.

Scott Chalk is the director of the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches(KABC) and he said the goal of the series isn’t to make money.  
 

If that’s the case then carry on.  At some point folks will realize that the money it costs to put on these games aren’t worth it anymore and put that money to use elsewhere.  

The difference in this series is the pageantry Indiana has surrounding this game. They do everything associated with the game at a first class level. Being an Indiana All-Star is one of the biggest high school honors you can have over there. They frame their jerseys and most schools prominently display a kids jersey at their schools. In KY it’s not like that. I’ve known kids through the years that were KY All Stars and you would never know it unless you had a program or an old box score. Their schools/communities do nothing to acknowledge the honor. The host sight arenas in KY aren’t the best. The jerseys are terrible. And the selection process has been down right criminal at times. Sad to say but it just means more in Indiana! And that’s why their kids still show up for the games….
