The word gets out, and then no one from outside the Region will want to come up and play you again. No, it won't happen up here, but in some parts of the Commonwelath......well.....

You know, I have never seen a referee yell at the fans in the stands. I have seen a Ref talk to a coach to tell him to tell the fans to cool it, but I have never seen a ref come over to the stands and tell the fans directly to be quiet......I guess some of the things that I have read from some of the 16 Region fans are true......

I would never want the refs to determine the final of any game. If I thought our refs were homering another team I would be the first on here to say how wrong that was and apologize to the other team. Let the girls fight it out and the best team wins. Next let me say that I take nothing away from the Russell players, class acts all the way. They even offered to help up our players when they did get tangled up. No trash talking or dirty playing at all on their side and the coaches even gave us parents pizza at the end of the game a nice bonus for the ride home. Like I said before good luck to both teams in the future.

The 16th region refs are not very good. I don't think they are biased they just aren't very good. That might explain the thin skin.

 

They can improve if they were given proper training. Just like in any job/career, the one at the Top is the leader and he/she must be held accountable for training officials. However, if he or she is not upto speed on evaluating, training, etc...then maybe that is where the finger needs pointed.

 

The local policy board is responsible for the hiring of the Assigning Secretary of Officials and I believe your school has one of these members on that board.

 

My suggestion to you would be to address your thoughts of how bad the officiating in the 16th Region is to the representitives from your district (you have three). Let them know how you feel so that when it comes time to evaluate the Assigning Secretary of Officials in the 16th Region, they can look at hiring someone new. Someone who can train officials and help them improve so that the games at your school and all other schools in the 16th Region are better officiated. :thumb:

Our officials would never intentially homer a team from outside the 9th. I made those comments in fun just to tease w/Russell's heads. Something to have them think about during the most enjoyable 2 1/2 hr, most boring drive in KY they have to make next yr.

I can understand if I would have driven 120 miles to play & the fouls were 29 - 15, I might be screaming too...BTW, prior to the last 3 or 4 mins when Boone really started fouling to try & get the ball back, the foul count was much closer...My guess is that 8 or 9 of Boone's fouls came in the last 3 mins or so...Take the "try to" fouls out & you have a 5 or 6 foul difference...Not bad considering the difference in the way the 2 teams play defense...If Russell had been down, the reverse would have happened...Did you really get homered?? No, but few would argue with you simply by looking at the boxscore...As for the comments from a "district opponent" that this is common when you play at Russell...........How do I say this? He's full of crap...Everyone in the 16th region uses the same officials and I can't think of more than 1 strictly Varsity official, as all of those were, who is from Russell...BTW, none of the officials in this game were from Russell and as a general rule, if you have direct ties to a particular school you generally do not get their games...

 

This game was only Russell's 5th home game out of 16 total games...For the season Russell has shot around 150 more free throws than their opponents and while not by this big a margin, Russell usually gets fouled more than they foul...There is an easy explanation for this...Russell pounds the ball inside...They have 3 athletic 6 footers who create huge mismatches for most teams they play...They account for 70% of Russell's total offense & free throw attempts...Usually, they either score or go to the free throw line...You are much more likely to shoot free throws when you pound it in rather than settling for outside shots...

 

As you saw today, Fortman creates big mis-matches & Coach Fookes stated to me after the game that she was disappointed that they could not find anyone who could guard her...I know she was probably not happy with the foul count but she is classy enough to not blame the refs...She stated that they were a little "leg weary" after the big game on Thursday and that the girls thought they could just play for 1 half and win...She stated that they need to be tougher mentally...She was disappointed in how they shot as well, 16-60 from the field & 4-18 from behind the 3 pt arc...They made almost that many 3's against Notre Dame...She said they "needed to get back to fundamentals" because they have developed some bad habits on defense, especially with rebounding...They were out-rebounded just as they were against Notre Dame (O'koro had 20 by herself)...

 

Also, while Russell plays man defense & presses some, they do not play the "up under your chin" man defense that many of their opponents, including Boone, play...It's more about positioning & help and they use their length to make it difficult on the opponent...95% of Russell's steals come from blocked passes caused by their length...It is rare to see one of their players pick someone's pocket...They also get good position for rebounds & try to limit you to 1 shot...

 

I hate to think that anyone thinks they got "hosed" when they visit our region...Unlike a lot of the posters on here who bash the 16th region officials, I see a lot of games in other regions & at the state tournament...OVERALL, ours compare to most and are better than many...It does look bad when the fouls are 29-15 but once again, other than the last few minutes they were MUCH closer...I'm sure there were more fouls that could have or should have been called...There are every game...But, to say the refs took the game from Boone is a slap in the face to Russell's girls...That was a good game played by 2 pretty evenly matched teams...Let's give credit to the girls from both teams...

Did Fookes start the same three girls and have them play the entire JV game, as well as a lot in the varsity game as she did in the NDA vs Boone JV game against Russell? Still don't understand the logic of that move by her.

Just curious about the ref and the comments toward the fans.... Cootby25 is a straight shooter, and I trust her comments.

I commend her on her shooting 17/20 pretty darn good. Are all 16 region refs so thin skinned. The Rebel faithful (that is us parents) yelled at what we thought was a bad call and the ref actually stopped reffing and came over to us and told us not to yell at them anymore. Now I have screamed at many refs, nothing derogative, or degrading, or cursing and never have they stopped and came over to tell the crowd to knock it off.

To Belfry. A few folks are still scratching their heads over that one.

 

Boone County is the biggest "quality win" for Russell this year. The reason that Russell "gets no respect" from folks doing the rankings is that they rarely stray out of Eastern KY. This win, especially if followed by a win against Montgomery County, should get the Lady Devils noticed.

I thought Magoffin County was a pretty good team this year.

Ironton (OH) seems to be a solid program also.

Russell is the best team in this area and deserves statewide recognition. A win over Montgomery County at Montgomery County would help. All of their other remaining games are home, close to home, or east of home and those won't get much coverage west of Russell.

29-15 isn't too lopsided as far as fouls go, or should i say i have seen a lot worse at some Lex. Cath. games

Everyone likes to make excuses when they lose , but I know the BC girls very good and they are athletes, when you beat them by 22 in one half your doing something and should get some recognition.

I agree with OldGuy , I don't understand Fookes dropping 3 girls down to play jv against ND seems pretty unclassy on her behalf

Devil 58, you must have watched a totally different game. First let me say, I do not mean to take anything away from the Russell girls. Fortman put on an offensive performance as Okoro gave Boone a lesson in how to rebound w/authority.

 

As for the refs/fouls, the refs stunk and you are right, they did not cost Boone the game. As I stated earlier, Boone had the nails in the coffin and did not drive them in to seal the lid shut. But, the fouls were not close towards the end of the game. Russell was in the bonus w/3or4 min left in the 3rd qt and shooting the double bonus w/5 min in the 4th. I remember w/3min left in the game the score was 45-47 Russell and they went on a free throw shooting rage. Boone did not have to foul towards the end since the score was close, yes, w/30 sec left they committed a few but don't say the fouls were close up until the end of the game.

 

If I remember right, Russell only made 3/4 shots in the 4th qt, the rest of the points were foul shots. Anyway, it don't matter. We are beating a dead horse in the mouth just to agree and disagree. It was a great game up until the last 2 min or so. You can think what you want about the 16th reg refs and I obviously will disagree. The 9th has some bad ones but I don't think any of them are as bad as the grey haired ref from your region.

 

As for Coaches remarks, she has to make those remarks to the home town people. She would never reveal her true feelings to someone she hardly knows regarding the refs. She was begging for a Technical in the 4th due to the lack of calls she was getting on the offensive end of the floor, no fouls while we were shooting, I guess you missed that.

 

Oh well, good luck to your girls the rest of the season. They could be a team to be reckoned w/due to their size and the play of Fortman and Okoro.

 

As for the 3 playing JV, why not? Obviously you all haven't seen every Boone game and they really haven't been playing well and really not playing as much in previous games. They needed some extra time and work, that is why they have been playing down. Sparrow and Findley have been playing JV all yr. Just the last few games has Brasseaux played down. She had been struggling and not playing much so Coach moved her down to get some extra work in, her choice, she is the head coach. This move has obviously put a fire under Brasseaux's rear and she has played pretty well as of late. All three are use to playing this much as they all played AAU, besides, Coach has them in shape.

Let me add one key statistic to all that has been mentioned but first, the game was much closer than the score.

 

Russell from the charity stripe: 29/43, Fortman was 17/20 herself

Boone from the charity stripe: 11/16

 

This is rediculous for a team to drive 2 1/2 hrs to get homered this bad. Boone is physical but not that physical. A man from a Russell district opponent made the comment to our parents that this is nothing unusual when a team comes to Russell to play to get that many fouls called against the visitor.

 

Field goals were even at 12 apiece, Boone hit 4 3's/Russell 2. Obviously the difference being at the line, what a joke but Boone had a chance to put the nail in the coffin and failed to do so.

 

As for the ranking, who else have the played besides Boone that is ranked in the top 20?

 

Fortman, what a player. Okoro is as strong on the boards as I have ever seen.

Don't count on getting homered in the 9th region next year. I seriously doubt 3point shooter exerts any influence over the officials Northern Kentucky. Seldom do teams in the rest of the state complain about the officiating they get when they head north. Quite the opposite.
