I would say it’s more like a 90 point game in the NBA, which happens every now and then.

NBA game 50% longer. 50% of 47 is 23. So 80-75 ish. Not common at all.

Well, both teams do allow just 49 points per game.

Hmmmm…defense travels.  Who knew? Good win for the Rocks. Collins is playing as well as anyone this time of year.

Winning, Rock style!

In my personal opinion, slower possessions on offense = the other team having to play defense for lengthy amount of times. Defense is more physically demanding than offense, and a team struggling to stay fresh normally equals them breaking down later in the game.
I wouldn’t say Collins playing controlling basketball, Coach Gaither is arguably the best coach in the 8th region. They are just extremely patient, and get great looks majority of times down the floor on offense.

Playing a patient game on offense normally leads to winning basketball.

It’s all subjective but I’ve seen Trinity play a bunch and they just have a terrible offense- it’s not patience, it’s just bad. Collins- they are patient but usually score more. Trinity does play good d and they grab a ton off the ball. Very very difficult to get open against them. Finally- the philosophy of “I have more talent so we are going to limit possessions” is contrary to what most greats coach’s would preach.  Rupp, wooden, Smith, Williams, self, crum, coach k etc.  If you have more talent you want more possessions…

I’d say Szabo does ok with the “talent”…..20 years = 2 state titles, 6 region titles, 6 LIT championships and 2 KOB championships. But maybe there are 5 or 10 other high school coaches in Kentucky that can top that resume?

I’ve seen a ton of games this year. The best coached team I’ve seen?  Nelson County!  Probably wont be winning many KOBs or anything else. Not sure how anyone can watch Trinity and say, dang, they’ve got it going on offensively. That guy really knows what he’s doing!  But I would agree with your overall point and think you said it perfectly- Szabo has done “ok”…

Sczabo won a title in 2019 with David Johnson and a bunch of other talent.  The score in the title game in 2019 was 50-40.

Also won title in 2012 with 2 D1 guys on the roster, but scored 71 points in the title game.

Maybe his strategy changed over time to be more ball control.

That’s the part I don’t get. People on here pointing to “all the talent”

He has had a few D1 guys but no more than Ballard, Male, Lex Cath, MC and CC.

Yet he’s the one that holds team back.

Go figure….

Bingo. 5-10 other schools in the state have had “plenty of talent” the last 20 years. Same resume???

And, the 2012 Trinity team led the state in team defense, won many games by 25 + points (look it up) and set a Sweet 16 record for 3 point shooting in Rupp Arena.

They’ve had 20 real games. Games this year of 44, 48, 48, 39, 50, 42, 47, 47.  Sorry- that’s ridiculous.  Yes- He’s holding them back. He’s got a point guard with a D1 offer.  A 2 guard who has been offered by a top NAIA school. Another guy being looked at by sec schools. How does male put up 60-80 game after game with toughest schedule in state?  You can say he has a different strategy but there is no debate- the strategy includes  holding people back. Fact. You are a fan and you may say- it helps them win. Just don’t know why a kid would want to play like that…

Ok, so this year the Vassar kid came over from J-Town, and the Johnson kid came from Male.

I’m not sure what to call that.

A most fortunate coincidence…

So you are now talking out both sides of your mouth.

Trinity gets all these great players but don’t know why a kid would want to play like that.

can't have it both ways….

I'm ending my thoughts on Coach Szabo with this: He’s been nothing but a class act for 20 plus years and has taken a program that had NEVER won the region to heights the school never thought they could attain.

It’s all good. We don’t have to see things the same way. His level of class was never part of the discussion and doesn’t speak to their offensive prowess- which was the whole point.  Why does everyone fall back on “classiness” whenever a coach is criticized. I did not condemn him to hell. I just think their offense this year sucks and he’s to blame.  Not really a controversial statement.  Maybe he doesn’t care and wants to grind it out. I gave real numbers. Gave real examples of this years team and colleges interested in the players.

A true defender of Sczabo would defend his offense, why he is right to do what he is doing.  The numbers are the numbers, he is slowing it down and playing ball control.  It is what it is.

I'm not a "true defender" of Coach Szabo. But if we're going to let numbers be numbers, let's take a look at them.

In the last 20 years Trinity has won 7th Region titles averaging as few as 58 ppg (2003/04) and as many as 72 ppg (2011/12). They've also lost in the Regional semis twice (2016/17 and 2020/2021) to Ballard with teams that scored 69 ppg. Sweet 16 Championships with 60 ppg in 2019 and 72 ppg in 2012.

So Trinity is averaging 61 points per game this year. They're holding opponents to 49 ppg. That's within the range of what Coach Szabo teams have accomplished in the past. So to me, what's happening this season, is that Trinity does what it does, win.

I've always heard a good coach makes adjustments to his game plan(s) based on his team's strengths. He just beat a similarly ranked team on the road. Maybe, just maybe, Trinity doesn't have the offensive firepower to put up flashy numbers. That's not holding anyone or anything back. If ball control works this season, it works.

Defense and grinding can still bring you home. The man's won a lot of games, both ways. I'm throwing it out there; he knows what he's doing.
