54th District is now seeded

Featured Replies

The 54th District out of the 14th Region voted to end the blind draw for basketball and will seed for the 2023-24 season.  The district teams are Hazard, Perry County Central, Leslie County, and Buckhorn

Time for the 39th to get with it.

I heard Buckhorn broke the tie vote. Perry and Hazard has always voted to seed and Buckhorn and Leslie didn’t want it. But I suppose they decided to go with the flow.

I believe the 39th and 44th (Madison County) are the only two that don't seed at this point.

It amazes me that this is still occurring. Does each team in the districts still play each other every season? In my opinion it almost makes the regular season meaningless to each team in the district.

It appears that Hazard and Perry played a home-and-home this season. Hazard played Leslie and had a game scheduled with Buckhorn that was canceled.

  • Perry Central played Leslie but not Buckhorn.
  • Buckhorn played a home-and-home with Leslie.

So it looks like almost everyone in the district plays each other. I do know that things got so heated between Hazard and Perry a few years back that I believe they stopped playing in the regular season. That's probably part of the reason why it has so long remained a draw.

Not to sound terrible or anything but rivalries getting that heated is what makes the district games so greay.

Reminder, there is no required method when seeding.  You don’t have to play each other.  You can seed by RPI, Cantrell, overall ranking, by media or committee.

Personally I think the best method is to play each other one time (or twice if you want), have the first game count as the seed game, and tie break with Cantrell Ratings.

My favorite option is play twice, both games count towards seeding, and tie breakers are decided by head to head, and if that is split then you move onto point margin.

The best option is how we do it in the 56th. Every team plays each other twice and there are tie breakers determined by point totals (up to 15 points).
The nice thing about seeding is it makes the season’s district games so much more meaningful. Crowds are bigger. Fans are into it. It’s not hardly a district tournament atmosphere but I’ve seen some intense games and crowd support over the years.
Our district went to seeding around 1980, before then it was a blind draw. My school, Owsley, is the smallest of the 56th district schools (enrollments Powell and Estill are close to 700, Lee around 280 and Owsley about 200) but have always supported seeding. And I might add over the past 40 years since seeding began the Owls and Lady Owls have competed pretty good with the others in district. The boys have won 10 district titles and the girls have won 17.

For the 39th, that would mean Mason County playing St. Patrick twice.  I don’t think that is beneficial for either team.

They would probably elect to play once.  It's not gonna happen though.  The smaller 2 won't won't vote to seed.

I’m for seeding but if I were Augusta and Saint Patrick I would never ever vote for it.  They are both excellent but very small schools with a combined total of 150 in high school.  Give them a break.
