Neither of these kids have a future at the next level, but both are adequate HS players.

 

 

This is really only Dynes 2nd year playing basketball due to injuries according to an interview of him I saw. The improvements he’s made from last year is insane. How about you at least show some optimism for the kid and not write him off immediately. He may not be an immediate impact but he will play in college. And Krohman will end up being a pretty nice player at a D2 or NAIA I am not sure how you don’t think he will play at the next level at all but to each their own.

You must really have a bad taste in your mouth for both of these boys and SK. Both of them will play at the next level. If you've watched these guys play, Dynes can disrupt on defense and Krohman can light it up on offense. Two nice players and grat kids.

I Agee both can play at next level.

No, I have no problem with either of these kids or SK.  Why would I have a problem with them, I personally know neither one of them.  I just don't think some people realize how good you have to be to play at the next level.

I do have a problem when family members join in on the forum promoting their kids.

I understand where you are coming from with this. I’m just not sure how you don’t see Krohman playing at the next level even if it’s a small school. 6’1 with possibly more room to grow and scores effectively at all 3 levels. But I guess we will have to agree to disagree which is totally fine.

Yes, He may have an opportunity at a D3, but that's not a full ride by any means.

Oh yea I agree that he won’t get a full ride. He’s gonna have to grow 2 more inches for that. But he can definitely play at the next level at a smaller college.

What's worse, a family member promoting their kid, or a random person who doesn't personally know the kid, criticizing them?

It's not a ride at all.   D3 exists for schools that do not provide athletic scholarships.   Though sometimes those schools will offer to mitigate the total cost a bit with other grants and scholarships, there is no athletic money - that's essentially the definition of D3.    

I would be stunned if Krohman isn't playing at an NAIA school - and getting a fully-paid education.    If you're really not pointed towards the pros, get the best education you can, allow the school to pay for it, and have a little fun playing basketball.    NAIA is a lot of fun, and there are a lot of strong programs right here in KY.

I love Krohman's game, his versatility, and his competitiveness.....but there are, unfortunately, a whole lot of 6'1" guards who can shoot out there, so the competition for D1 and D2 spots is incredibly intense.   Most of your major programs expect their guards to be 6'3" - 6'6"....

I had sons who were NAIA and D3 athletes .....they both got good educations, competed for highly successful programs, and enjoyed their sports for as long as they could.   (though my wallet enjoyed the NAIA trip a lot more!)

I'm not criticizing them as individual, I'm stating my opinion on their athletic ability.

For those of us who are 1980’s NBA fans, Dynes reminds me of this guy, Chuck Nevitt who was always on a roster, but hardly ever played.  7’4” guys always had a spot on an NBA roster.  As for his potential: he has to put on a ton of muscle, add athleticism & mobility, and that is on him and how much he loves the game and is willing to put in the work.  His size got him a free ride but now it’s on him.  From what I have heard he is an extremely likable kid.  

Krohman:  nice feel for the game, nice ballhandler, the stats say he is an efficient scorer and shooter.  I would say he is gonna fall into the Dallas Roberts category of not tall enough or explosive enough athletically to be a D1.  

Just to add some perspective, I saw Evan Ipsaro (Cov Cath) in an AAU game in Fort Wayne last spring, his Indiana Elite team was playing Indy Heat Gym Rats who were loaded with D1 talent.  Ipsaro gets in the lane at will in high school games, kills teams at the rim and with 15ft pull-ups (FOR EXAMPLE: 13-18 from 2 vs DeSales, didn’t attempt a 3).  In that AAU game he didn’t get in the paint once, and the only shot I saw was a step back three (which didn’t fall).  Just for clarification, I LOVE Evan’s game and have been watching him torch opponents since 3rd grade, my kid has been on the receiving end of butt-whoopings doled out by him many times.  

The point as it relates to Krohman is that until you see that speed and size in person, it’s tough to appreciate, and it can limit evens the most dominant high school players.  If Evan Ipsaro was 6’5 with his same speed/game he would have his pick of power 5 schools.  Krohman has nowhere near the tools as Evan, even tho he is a really nice player.  I think NAIA D1, NCAA D2 is probably the ceiling for him unless he grows 3” and transforms athletically.  

Yes there are lots of D3, small school and places for kids like Krohman can play and possibly NAIA.  You can’t teach height,  if Dynes can put on weight in college it will be a difference on how good he can be.  

Keep in mind what a lot of folks don't realize - good NAIA teams are generally a lot better than good D3 teams.    Sure, there are exceptions, but that's generally the case.   My NAIA son was on teams that regularly whipped D3 teams....  And my D3 son regularly got beaten by NAIA schools....     In other words, if the better competition is what you seek - and D1 and D2 are not in the mix - go NAIA.

Regarding Gabe Dynes.....I was told the other day that - if you are a 7-foot basketball player in HS - you have a 19% chance of making an NBA roster.    That seems like an extraordinary stat to me, if true.   Nearly 1 in 5?   (Of course, there aren't all that many 7-footers..... )    I'm not quoting that as fact - just relaying what someone else told me.    Can any of you out there support or debunk that quote?   Would be interested to hear.....

I strongly agree you on the NAIA route.

The only big kid that I can remember from the Commonwealth that has played in the NBA was Felton Spencer, and I'm not sure he was 7 foot when he was in HS.  Maybe Jim McDaniels had a cup of coffee in the NBA.
