8th Region Week 7 Review

Top 5 Players:

Now that we are well over the halfway point and I have had the opportunity to see majority of the teams in the region, I figured I would list my top-5 players currently in the region. These are my own personal rankings and would appreciate if people dropped their list below!

 

1. Teagan Moore (Owen County)- I think this one is obvious, and almost everyone would most likely agree that Moore is the unanimous #1 player in the region currently. Through 16 games, Moore is averaging 33.5 ppg, 11.8 rpg, shooting 68.7% from the field, 49.3% from 3, and 83.3% from the line.

2. Jasper Johnson (Woodford County)- While their team has struggled this year, and he has missed a few games, Johnson is a dominant guard, and he is only going to get better throughout the years only being a sophomore. He is averaging 21.1 ppg, 49.1% from the field, 41.8% from 3, and 75.6% from the line.

3. Dallas Roberts (North Oldham)- While Roberts stats aren’t as good as the rest of the players on this list, he is by far a top-5 player in the region. He is averaging 18 ppg, shooting 47.1% from the field, 43.7% from 3, and 85.9% from the line.

4. Dylan Hammonds (Grant County)- Hammonds squad is currently 16-2, and majority of it is because of his impact. Hammonds is averaging 28.1 ppg, 13.6 rpg, shooting 56.1% from the field, 36.8% from 3, and 74.2% from the line.

5. Max Green (Oldham County)- This kid needs to be on everyone’s list, as his impact he puts on a game is like no other. He grew a few inches before the season and is now probable the tallest guard in the region. Through 14 games, Green averages 25.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 48.2% from the field, 38.8% from 3, and a ridiculous 90.3% from the line.

 

Henry County Classic

This Saturday (1/21) some of the best teams in the region will square off against each other at Henry County.

The schedule is Simon Kenton vs Collins, South Oldham vs Henry County, Owen County vs Oldham County, and Spencer County vs Grant County.

Some of the times are posted, but some are the same times as other games. I will try to find a schedule to the classic and post it in this thread.

This is a great day of basketball within the 8th region, with some of the best players in the region competing against each other. If you have nothing to do, I would highly recommend attending this slate of games.

 

 

Rankings

This week (and maybe the rest of the year), I will break the rankings down into 3 sections. Each section will have 6 teams in it, and they will be the contenders, competitors, and the outsiders.

 

Contenders

This is the group that is in the front line for a run in the regional tournament. All 6 have had impressive seasons so far and are looking for an appearance at Rupp Arena. Personally, after North Oldham and Collins I think the other 4 teams are a toss-up, and the rankings of them could change daily.

 

1 – North Oldham Mustangs (15-5)

Coach Levitch’s squad stays in the #1 spot, and I am not sure if they will be moving out of it anytime soon. The Mustangs went 2-0 this week and are not on a 4-game win streak and are 8-1 in their last 9 games.

Their first game this week was against Dixie Heights. They came out on top winning 67-37. They had 4 players in double figures, with Ryan Howard (15), Luke Anderson (14), Dallas Roberts (13), and Grant Neal (10).

The Final game of North Oldham’s week they squared off against Meade County. Another blowout win occurred for the Mustangs, winning 71-36. Anderson had a monster night, scoring 36 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and went 17/19 from the field.

This Week: 1/17 @ Jeffersonville, IN 1/20 vs Oldham County

 

2 – Collins Titans (15-2)

Collins has had a great season thus far and are proving that they are very capable of winning another regional title. While saying that, the Titans were handed their 2nd loss of the year this week.

Friday night they played district rival Anderson County. They were expected to come out on top but wound up losing 46-51. This game really shakes up the 30th district, and it will probably be the toughest district to get out of come tournament time. Stats are not posted for the game.

The next day they turned around and faced a 16-1 Grant County squad and dominated all game. They controlled the momentum for most of the game and ended up beating the Braves 78-53. Stats are not posted for this game as well.

This Week: 1/20 vs Spencer County 1/21 vs Simon Kenton (Henry County Classic, 5:00 PM)

 

3 – Owen County Rebels (12-4)

The Rebels are jumping up big in the rankings this week, and it is well deserved. They are currently on a 6-game win streak, with double digits wins over Walton-Verona and Spencer County. They also have another double-digit win over Grant County earlier in the season. After watching this team many times, they can play some defense. Their height gives people issues scoring in the paint, and they guard the perimeter well and give shooters problems getting good shots off.

They started off the week traveling to Eminence, winning 75-60. Moore led with 35 points while grabbing 15 rebounds and went 13/17 from the field.

Owen County went on the host Trimble County, almost reaching the century mark for the first time this season. The final score was 97-63. Moore (30) and Brax Ward (22) combined for 52 points; Moore also had 16 rebounds.

Saturday night, they traveled to play a very good Spencer County squad. The Rebels got out to a lead early and never looked back, they would end up winning 86-66. Moore controlled the entirety of the game and ended with 44 points and 15 rebounds.

This Week: 1/16 vs Henry County 1/19 @ Gallatin County 1/21 vs Oldham County (Henry County Classic, time TBD)

 

4 – Simon Kenton Pioneers (12-5)

The Pioneers have excelled past their expectations this season but are still looking for that statement win later in the season. They have beat North Oldham (Roberts was out), South by 30 which is impressive, and their Anderson County win now looks a lot better than it did at the time.

They started off the week traveling to Highlands and lost 50-68. Issac Gabbard led with 17 points, Travis Krohman and Gabe Dynes added in 11.

Friday night they hosted district rival Walton-Verona and wound up winning 53-46. Stats are not posted for this game. Their seeding in the district will be close to settled after this week.

This Week: 1/17 @ Williamstown 1/20 vs Grant County 1/21 vs Collins (Henry County Classic 5:00 PM)

 

5 – Spencer County Bears (11-5)

The Bears have had a very up and down season thus far and went 1-1 last week.

Friday night they traveled to play Shelby County, winning 63-37 to move their win streak to 6 games.

The next day they hosted Owen County and wound up surprisingly losing 66-86. Stats are not posted for either game.

This Week: 1/17 vs Bullitt Central 1/20 @ Collins 1/21 vs Grant County (Henry County Classic 2:00 PM)

 

6 – Grant County Braves (16-2)

While I have been high on the Braves this season, they are still awaiting that statement win this year. They have the best winning % in the region, however they haven’t played a very tough schedule.

They started off the week at Boone County winning 74-48. Hammonds had 21, Hunter Scalf had 15 and Spencer Breeden put in 14.

Saturday, they traveled to Shelbyville to face the #2 team in the region Collins. Grant County got off to a very slow start down by as much as 15 in the first half. They made a late push in the half cutting it to single digits going into halftime. The second half was all Collins, and the Braves lost 53-78. Hammonds had 25 and 13, and Breeden added in 14.

This Week: 1/17 vs Conner 1/20 @ Simon Kenton 1/21 vs Spencer County (Henry County Classic, 2:00 PM)

 

Competitors

This group can pull off an upset against any team in the top 6, however they haven’t yet proven enough that they are a front-runner in the regional tournament. This group can be sneaky, and they need to be on your watch list going into tournament time. Everyone in this section can compete, and all the games for the majority will be close between the 6.

 

7 – Anderson County Bearcats (13-4)

Anderson County was a wild card going into the season. They have had struggles in recent years, where they didn’t look like a normal Anderson County team. This year however, they seem to be flipping the script back to the old Bearcats. Currently, they are on an 8-game winning streak.

They hosted Rockcastle County on the 10th and won 66-62. They had 5 players in double digits, led by Carson Sutherland with 17.

Friday night, they hosted on of the best teams in the region, Collins. Anderson County has a sure underdog in this game but pulled off the upset winning 51-46. They were led by Joey Frasure with 25, and Sutherland assisted with 10.

This Week: 1/16 @ Holy Cross (Louisville)   1/17 vs Bluegrass United (Lexington) 1/21 @ Casey County

 

8 – Oldham County Colonels (8-7)

I got the opportunity to watch the Colonels for the first time this season this week, and they impressed me. While their record is only 8-7, in my eyes they can compete with anyone in the region.

They have one game this week, Friday night vs their inter-county rival South Oldham. It was a very close game for the entirety of it, but the Colonels wound up on top winning 78-76. Stats are not posted for the game.

This Week: 1/17 vs Walton-Verona 1/20 @ North Oldham 1/21 vs Owen County (Henry County Classic, time TBA)

 

9 – Walton-Verona Bearcats (12-5)

This squad started out the season on fire, winning their first 5 games, and were putting up ridiculous offensive numbers. However, in the last couple weeks they have slowed down a little bit. Other than their win against Williamstown this week, the Bearcats have only hit the 70-point mark twice since 2023 came around.

Their first game this week was against Williamstown, where they won 96-75. Aaron Gutman led the team with 35 points. Side note for this game: Julian Dixon was ejected in the 1st quarter, and was suspended for the next 2 games of the week. He should return as normal this week.

Friday night they traveled to Simon Kenton and lost a close one 46-53.

Saturday, they defeated Ryle 69-67. Stats are not posted for either game.

This Week: 1/17 @ Oldham County 1/20 @ Augusta

 

10 – Woodford County Yellow Jackets (6-9)

This team has a lot of upside with one of the top players in the region, Jasper Johnson. They took the week off, and maybe after a week of rest they will get hot at the right time and build back up to where they were projected to be before the season began.

This Week: 1/20 @ Shelby County 1/21 @ Beech (Hendersonville, TN)

 

11 – South Oldham Dragons (7-9)

Along with Oldham County, I got to watch this squad for the first time this season the past week. They as well impressed me. This team is fun to watch, like every other Steve Simpson team, this team shoots a ton of 3’s, but they play extremely hard for all 32 minutes of the game. If they get hot, they can pull off an upset against anyone.

Their only game this week was against Oldham County, losing 76-78. William Burnside led the team with 23 points, and Christian Veirs assisted with 16. They went 13/24 from 3 on the game.

This Week: 1/17 @ Louisville Collegiate 1/18 vs Bullitt East 1/21 @ Henry County (6:30)

 

12 – Shelby County Rockets (8-9)

The Rockets have struggled recently, losing 4 of their last 5 games. However, they have been against good competition. 3 of the 4 losses have been to teams ranked higher than them in the 8th, the 4th coming to Meade County.

To start off the week, the traveled to Meade County losing 61-65 in overtime. Dillon Ritchey led with 24, going 8/15 from behind the arc.

Friday night they hosted Spencer County and lost 37-63. Stats are not posted for the game.

This Week: 1/17 @ Waggener 1/20 vs Woodford County

 

Outsiders

This group is the bottom of the 3. These teams are competitive against the 6 teams ahead of them; however, they will struggle to compete with the top 6. There is a drastic change in skill from the top to bottom of this group though. The first 3 teams can be competitive with many teams, and the last 3 have been beatdown by multiple teams ahead of them.

 

13 – Williamstown Demons (8-8)

Williamstown has struggled since the new year rang around, going 1-3.

This week, they started off against district opponent Walton-Verona, and did not compete with them like they did in the All ‘A’, losing 75-96. Colton Feagan led with 24, Honore Yangoua put in 21, and Gunner Feagan had 20.

They bounced back 2 days later, beating Heritage Academy 68-61. C. Feagan again led the Demons with 24.

This Week: 1/17 vs Simon Kenton 1/21 @ Powell County (3:30 PM)

 

14 – Gallatin County Wildcats (7-8)

Coach Sullivan’s squad seems to finally be finding their groove this season and are starting to get hot at just the right time. After going 1-6 in their first 7 games, they have gone 6-2 in their last 8.

This week, they hosted rival Carroll County and won in blowout fashion, 85-49. Matthew Griffin led with 26 points, and Kellen Dossett added in 17.

Friday night they traveled to Henry County, winning big again 67-49. Andrew Brinker led the Cats with 20 points. They will have 2 more district seeding games this week, as they try to get themselves in a good position for yet another regional appearance.

This Week: 1/16 @ Eminence 1/19 vs Owen County 1/21 vs Pendleton County (3:30 PM)

 

15 – Trimble County Raiders (9-8)

The Raiders have been mainly led by JT Wilcoxson (23.4 ppg) and Ethan Horn (19.3 ppg) but are struggling to find a 3rd scoring option to help them win some of their tight games.

They started off the week against Henry County, winning 60-52. Wilcoxson led with 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

Next, they traveled to Owen County letting the Rebels score their season high 97 points against them. Ethan Horn put in 24 points.

This Week: 1/16 @ Carroll County 1/18 @ Dayton 1/20 vs Eminence

 

16 – Eminence Warriors (7-8)

The Warriors had a somewhat confusing week.

They started off hosting the best team in their district, Owen County and competed with them, but wound up losing 60-75. Avery Holland put in 24 points, and Josh Ruzanka assisted with 14.

After competing with one of the best teams in the region, they turned around 3 days later and lost to the worst team in the region. They traveled to Carroll County and lost 56-59. Stats are not posted for the game.

This Week: 1/16 vs Gallatin County 1/20 @ Trimble County 1/21 vs KCD

 

17 – Henry County Wildcats (2-15)

The Wildcats; atrocious season continued this week, losing both of their games. They are now on an 11-game losing streak.

They hosted Trimble County and lost 52-60. Jerred Slone led with 27 points, going 5/10 from behind the arc.

Friday night, they hosted Gallatin County. After playing them close for a half, Gallatin pulled away and Henry lost 49-67. Stats are not posted for the game.

This Week: 1/16 @ Owen County 1/20 vs Carroll County 1/21 vs South Oldham (6:30 PM)

 

18 – Carroll County Panthers (2-14)

The Panthers first game of the week was against Gallatin County, where they lost 49-85.

After losing 13 of their first 14 games, they ended their 11-game losing streak with a win over district opponent Eminence on Friday night. They won 59-56, and stats are not posted for either game.

This Week: 1/16 vs Trimble County 1/20 @ Henry County

Their only game this week was against Oldham County, losing 76-78. William Burnside led the team with 23 points, and Christian Veirs assisted with 16. They went 13/24 from 3 on the game.

12 – Shelby County Rockets (8-9)

The Rockets have struggled recently, losing 4 of their last 5 games. However, they have been against good competition. 3 of the 4 losses have been to teams ranked higher than them in the 8th, the 4th coming to Meade County.

To start off the week, the traveled to Meade County losing 61-65 in overtime. Dillon Ritchey led with 24, going 8/15 from behind the arc.

Friday night they hosted Spencer County and lost 37-63. Stats are not posted for the game.

This Week: 1/17 @ Waggener 1/20 vs Woodford County

 

Outsiders

This group is the bottom of the 3. These teams are competitive against the 6 teams ahead of them; however, they will struggle to compete with the top 6. There is a drastic change in skill from the top to bottom of this group though. The first 3 teams can be competitive with many teams, and the last 3 have been beatdown by multiple teams ahead of them.

 

13 – Williamstown Demons (8-8)

Williamstown has struggled since the new year rang around, going 1-3.

This week, they started off against district opponent Walton-Verona, and did not compete with them like they did in the All ‘A’, losing 75-96. Colton Feagan led with 24, Honore Yangoua put in 21, and Gunner Feagan had 20.

They bounced back 2 days later, beating Heritage Academy 68-61. C. Feagan again led the Demons with 24.

This Week: 1/17 vs Simon Kenton 1/21 @ Powell County (3:30 PM)

 

14 – Gallatin County Wildcats (7-8)

Coach Sullivan’s squad seems to finally be finding their groove this season and are starting to get hot at just the right time. After going 1-6 in their first 7 games, they have gone 6-2 in their last 8.

This week, they hosted rival Carroll County and won in blowout fashion, 85-49. Matthew Griffin led with 26 points, and Kellen Dossett added in 17.

Friday night they traveled to Henry County, winning big again 67-49. Andrew Brinker led the Cats with 20 points. They will have 2 more district seeding games this week, as they try to get themselves in a good position for yet another regional appearance.

This Week: 1/16 @ Eminence 1/19 vs Owen County 1/21 vs Pendleton County (3:30 PM)

 

15 – Trimble County Raiders (9-8)

The Raiders have been mainly led by JT Wilcoxson (23.4 ppg) and Ethan Horn (19.3 ppg) but are struggling to find a 3rd scoring option to help them win some of their tight games.

They started off the week against Henry County, winning 60-52. Wilcoxson led with 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

Next, they traveled to Owen County letting the Rebels score their season high 97 points against them. Ethan Horn put in 24 points.

This Week: 1/16 @ Carroll County 1/18 @ Dayton 1/20 vs Eminence

 

16 – Eminence Warriors (7-8)

The Warriors had a somewhat confusing week.

They started off hosting the best team in their district, Owen County and competed with them, but wound up losing 60-75. Avery Holland put in 24 points, and Josh Ruzanka assisted with 14.

After competing with one of the best teams in the region, they turned around 3 days later and lost to the worst team in the region. They traveled to Carroll County and lost 56-59. Stats are not posted for the game.

This Week: 1/16 vs Gallatin County 1/20 @ Trimble County 1/21 vs KCD

 

17 – Henry County Wildcats (2-15)

The Wildcats; atrocious season continued this week, losing both of their games. They are now on an 11-game losing streak.

They hosted Trimble County and lost 52-60. Jerred Slone led with 27 points, going 5/10 from behind the arc.

Friday night, they hosted Gallatin County. After playing them close for a half, Gallatin pulled away and Henry lost 49-67. Stats are not posted for the game.

This Week: 1/16 @ Owen County 1/20 vs Carroll County 1/21 vs South Oldham (6:30 PM)

 

18 – Carroll County Panthers (2-14)

The Panthers first game of the week was against Gallatin County, where they lost 49-85.

After losing 13 of their first 14 games, they ended their 11-game losing streak with a win over district opponent Eminence on Friday night. They won 59-56, and stats are not posted for either game.

This Week: 1/16 vs Trimble County 1/20 @ Henry County

I know Woodford County has struggled so far this year, but I would have to flip them and Grant County.  A healthy Woodford certainly has more upside than Grant, seen them both play a few times.  After the Grant/Collins game, I strongly feel that Grant is just a pretender.

I see what you are saying, however throughout this season Woodford has struggled to win games. These rankings aren’t necessarily ranked on who will win the region, it’s more of how they’re currently playing. Don’t know if that makes sense or not, couldn't think of a good way to word it lol.

I know it’s an out of region win but would SK winning at Ashland be considered a statement win in your eyes? I would say that’s SK’s best in state win because Roberts was out when they played North.

Teagan Moore against Spencer County was about as perfect of a high school basketball game that one kid could play. 44 and 15 and felt like it could've been even more. Bad matchup for the Bears but regardless, kid is a hooper.

Yes, haven't got to watch Ashland, but they play a tough schedule and are sitting at 12-6.

Grant has a chance this week to redeem themselves from that bad showing against Collins. They get a very good Conner squad at home Tuesday. Then Friday night they play Simon Kenton on the road in what I think is their most important game so far this season. And a few hours later it's off to The Roy to take on a dangerous Spencer County team. This week will go along way to determine pretender or contender!

I totally agree with your thoughts.  Trust me I'm not ragging on Grant, but I believe at the end of the week they will be 0/3.  Just my thoughts.

It is fair to question grant- lost by a combined 41 to Owen and Collins on road.  But very hard to “connect the dots” this year in HS hoops. Collins lost to anderson and struggled to beat south. Grant beat them both easily. Time will tell.

Lol... welcome to my life every week.

My outlook on Grant is that they were blown out Collins and Owen, 2 of the best teams in the region. Both of these teams play a very similar game style, and it creates success on the basketball court. You will rarely see a team that plays like this have an off night (especially if you have Teagan Moore). Until they can knock off one of these top teams, I will have to keep them lower.

Anderson is a solid team, but the upset against Collins was a huge district rival game on a Friday night (these types of games almost always play closer). 

South Oldham is a tough team that plays very hard, and majority of their offense is from 3. You either live by it or die by it.... this gives them the capability of knocking off the best teams in the region, but also losing to many teams in the region that they shouldn't lose to, or even getting blown out by teams that they are capable of beating. The Dragons might have the best chance at a "Cinderalla" story come tournament time.

If they are 0/3 this week, we will see what they are really made of. Will they step up and take it in as a learning experience, or convince themselves that maybe they aren't as good as their record says?

But I would agree with your statement in the post saying that SK is in need of 1 more statement win. If they can knock off Collins on Saturday then I think they’ll establish themselves as true contenders.

After this week they have ten games left including the opening round district game.  I don't see them closing the season at any better than a 500 record.
