All “A” Classification Guidelines

Man this really has my brain spinning!  We have six classes in football, three classes in track and mostly all other sports are non- classified.  I would think following the football classifications would probably get you closer to what I would consider “A” vs “2A” than that of track.

Football only has 223 participants; basketball has close to 280. Football only uses the number of boys in a school while basketball would have to incorporate both genders since both play the sport. Classifying the two sports - and the methods used - are really two completely different things.

Does anyone have a list of the top 10 largest “A” schools?  I know Walton-Verona, Owen Co. and Carroll Co. Are close to the top of the list.  Just curious.

Looks like there are 112 entries in this year's "All 'A' Classic."

Largest tournament schools by Region per the KHSAA's 2022/2023 enrollment figures - the top quartile of the 112:

Region 1

• 553 Murray

• 545 Mayfield

Region 2

• 546 Caldwell County

• 430 Crittenden County

Region 3

• 484 Hancock County

• 413 McLean County

• 411 Owensboro Catholic

Region 4

• 590 Glasgow

• 551 Todd County Central

• 518 Monroe County

• 458 Metcalfe County

• 426 Clinton County

Region 5

• 560 Washington County

• 467 Green County

Region 6

• 426 Shawnee

Region 8

• 574 Carroll County

• 557 Owen County

• 549 Walton-Verona

• 494 Gallatin County

Region 9

• 496 Beechwood

• 454 St. Henry

Region 12

• 524 Somerset

• 481 Danville

Region 13

• 546 Jackson County

Region 14

• 558 Knott County Central

• 470 Leslie County

Region 15

• 531 Shelby Valley

• 529 Martin County

• 490 Prestonsburg

• 410 East Ridge

• 405 Betsy Layne

Region 16

• 525 West Carter

If these 400+ enrollment 2A sized schools were removed from the "All A," the Regional entries remaining would vary a good bit in number and still have a wide range of size (33-394 students).

Region 1 - 8; Region 2 - 4; Region 3 - 2

Region 4 -3; Region 5 - 4; Region 6 - 5

Region 7 - 5; Region 8 - 3; Region 9 - 8;

Region 10 - 8; Region 11 - 5;

Region 12 - 3; Region 13 - 8;

Region 14 - 7; Region 15 - 3;

Region 16 - 5

• Would an all A "All A" regional or statewide tournament draw enough fans with this number of smaller schools to make the endeavor - worthwhile, interesting, or profitable?

If the "All A" took the smallest 90 schools and the "2A Championships" took the next 90 schools you would have more of a small school and midsized school feel to the tournament. That would leave roughly the largest 90 schools not participating in either.

I personally feel 3 classes in basketball bringing the "elite 8" to Rupp for a state championship would create a larger fan following than our current setup. I know the reason it's not touched is because it's the "cash cow" but I personally believe the 3 class system bringing 24 teams to Rupp instead of 16 would generate more funds. You would have some communities that have never been shut the entire town down to go support.

Rumor has it that all 3 of them are out of the ‘A’ next year.

A path to a good result might be easier  playing in the "2A Championship Tournament" Sectionals with a chance for a title at the Owensboro SportsCenter.

At least two schools that had qualifying All 'A' numbers, Floyd Central (557) and Belfry (531), chose to play in the "2A" this season.

That is not correct, Belfry and Floyd Central were neither eligible for the All A. Per the 2A Championships guidelines All A teams can not elect to play up in the 2A.

Are you sure that's accurate? This link lists the participating schools and neither are listed among the 15th Region schools.

Based my calculations on the fact that several schools playing in the All 'A' have similar/larger enrollments:

Mayfield 545, Murray 553, Caldwell Co. 546, Glasgow 590, Todd Co. Central 551, Washington Co. 560, Carroll Co. 574, Owen Co. 557, Walton-Verona 549, Jackson Co. 546, Knott Co. Central 558, Shelby Valley 531.

Edmondson Co. 592, is playing in the Girls All 'A'.

There are a fair number of schools that chose not to play in the All 'A' too. Maybe that opened up some slots for the bigger schools.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

IMO… the ‘2A’ is no where near the All ‘A’. Not saying it doesn’t have the potential to be… but if I was a player I’d much rather play in a packed environment at EKU rather than play at the Owensboro arena.

I think the All A uses a two year average to determine teams that are involved.

Is that for sure?  Looking at the 2A bracket and there are some schools smaller than the 1A listed.

Might have answered my own question- do they classify single gender schools differently for enrollment purposes- like if it’s all girls or all boys do they double the enrollment numbers to equalize?

There are rumblings around the 8th All A Tournament that Owen, Carroll, and Walton-Verona will not be in next year.

I have heard the same things.

That would leave Eminence, Gallatin Co, Trimble Co and Williamstown as the 8th Region All "A" teams.
