South Warren (4-3) at Greenwood (6-2)

THIS IS A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME!

The Spartans travel about 10-11 miles across Southern Warren County over to The Swamp to take on Greenwood!  This will be the last district matchup for both schools with the winner securing second place in the district and the right to host a first-round playoff games!  BIG DEAL!!!

These 2 have played a total of 10 games since their first matchup in the 2013 season when South was in 3A.  South Warren leads this series 9-1, with the only Gator victory a memorable 2016 game at Greenwood that saw the Gators win 17-16.  That game saw Greenwood lead 17-0 behind star QB Jackson Adams with South storming back overcoming injuries and scored what seemed to be the tying TD with under 3 minutes to play.  South had all the momentum at that time and Coach Smith elected to go for 2 and they didn’t get it.  The Gators recovered the onsides kick and got a Big first down to run the clock out.  But that’s the only Gator win in this series.  Could this be #2?

Greenwood comes in this game after falling last week 35-7 to district foe Bowling Green.  TE/RB/QB/LB Lofton Howard was really good for GW getting an incredibly athletic INT, forcing a BG fumble, throwing a TD pass, and earning several first downs out of the wildcat, all the while being a beast LB.  Very good player.

The Spartans come into this game absolutely dismantling poor ole Christian County 52-14 and leading 45-7 at halftime.  QB Bryce Button plays well again for South, as does RB Jimmy Sales.  I don’t know if Christian Conyers is currently injured or playing for South right now.  Anyone know?

This has the potential to be a good game.  I think Greenwood needs to start really well in order to believe they can get it done.  What say you?  Who wins and why?

  • I just looked back on the Sporting Times Page and GREAT NEWS! This game WILL be streamed from this link tonight beginning at 7:45 pm Eastern Time I think.

  • SW will load it up to stop the run and probably will. Huff is gonna have to throw it better against SW than he did BG. The offensive line is gonna have to give him more time.

  • Referees are needed for the WKU vs UAB game, so they moved in town games up a day, same with FS vs WE. Good thing we are in Hoptown Friday.

I’d be curious how many starters for South Warren are injured and may not be playing.

A fully healthy South Warren would have no issues beating Greenwood. A short handed South Warren could have some trouble.

Regardless I don’t think Greenwood will win.  I’ll take South Warren by at least two touchdowns.

Couple teams with some soft schedules. Should be a pillow fight between these two who constantly play lower level competition.

Give me South 24-13.

Good observation with the schedules. Do we know if South is fully healthy?  I would think the Spartans could handle Greenwood fairly handily if they are.

We don't really get any South fans on here much.  The majority of people that talk about them are BG fans.

Spartans need to be ready to play. I still think there is something Gators are going to do this season that will be a surprise to many.

It may not be probable they win Thursday night but it is possible.

I was really impressed with the Howard kid. 2nd best player the Purples has seen behind Quisenberry at Boyle.

Why is this game on Thursday?

A lot of games being played Thursday to accommodate official shortages.

SW will load it up to stop the run and probably will. Huff is gonna have to throw it better against SW than he did BG. The offensive line is gonna have to give him more time.

I agree and think this is what the game boils down to.

I agree.  That’s why I just don’t see Greenwood being a threat to win this game.

Game Day for this intriguing game!

No word on injuries.  I expect South to carry the day, but I know Greenwood will fight with all they have.  And if Conyers doesn't play, Greenwood has the best player on the field in Lofton Howard.  Will be interesting and entertaining.  Can Greenwood get Win #2 in this series?

This game being streamed anywhere?

DT, It isn't listed on the Sporting Times website right now, but that could change.  That website is:

- Sporting Times (stfanclub.com)

Again, it isn't listed now, but hope that changes.  That's all I know of.

Meant to vote on this game earlier. I'm going to take Greenwood in the upset by a score. I believe that their defense has enough to tackle South's athletes. Greenwood also has the ability to be explosive on offense as well. And lastly, anything can happen in these rivalry district games.

GW: 20

SW: 14
