Dawgs Try To Wrestle Their Leash Away From Haywood, Pirates

Records: Belfry (4-3) | Lawrence County (6-1)

BGP Ranking: Belfry (#5 in 3A) | Lawrence County (#8 in 3A)

Series History: Belfry leads 29-9 all-time

Table Setter: The belief that 'this is the year Lawrence County gets over the Belfry hump' has swelled in recent years. The Bulldogs have steadily improved under Alan Short to restore respectability to the name of this proud eastern Kentucky program, but as we've witnessed time and time again, the decline of Belfry football has been slightly, if not greatly, exaggerated. Belfry's modus operandi, combined with one of 3A's most demanding schedules, has kept the Pirates at the forefront of the class and the Dawgs chasing their tail. It's a chase that's been going on for twenty years, with Belfry winning the last 23 meetings. They nearly caught it last year in a one score playoff loss on Pond Creek.

Both are ranked as they prepare for battle in Louisa. Belfry's record is smattered with three losses to ranked teams, while Lawrence County has a single loss to a low-key solid Greenup County team. Per usual, both live and die by their ground and pound offensive philosophies, meaning turnovers and field position are of paramount importance.

Oddly enough, it might not matter as much this year for Lawrence County to get over the hump with the change in playoff procedures. A second meeting between these two teams would likely come much later in the postseason than it has the last few seasons.

Podcast game of the Week!

As my old Lawrence County college teammate Brad Derifield would say "that dog won't hunt."  Belfry, comfortably.

I think Belfry is the smart choice, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Dawgs pull this one out.

That didn't take long.

3 and out LC

Fortunate it is not 14-0 as LB dropped an INT that could have been a Pick 6.

LC playing VERY tight. Already two offsides before Belfry snapped an offensive play.

Pirates driving into red zone.

1st and Goal at 9

Game is on NFHS Network by the way

Broadcast quality is not exactly Prepspin though.

Correction 3rd and 3 at the 4. Young stopped just shy. 4th and 1. Now they decide to measure. 6 inches short.

Young stopped and LC celebrates but forgot he could get the 1st Down.

1st and Goal and Young scores easily.

14-0 Belfry

A PI call and a completion has LC driving across midfield.

End of 1st

14-0 Belfry
