If you go by every organization that awards a national championship each year, Notre Dame has had 21 beginning with 1919.

(1919, 1920, 1924, 1927, 1929, 1930, 1938, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1988, 1989, 1993)

Officially, Notre Dame is listed as having 11 consensus championships:

(1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1966, 1973, 1977, 1988)

Of those, the only ones that can be disputed (one overwhelmingly so) are:

-1947 (Only three out of 14 sources have Notre Dame as champions, and one of those list both Notre Dame and Michigan as champions - Michigan has 12 of 14)

-1973 (Split national title, 15 different sources have champions, Notre Dame is recognized by 6 as the champion including the Associated Press - Alabama received the other major outlet vote in the Coaches Poll, but they lost to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. '73 was the last year the coaches' poll was released before the bowl games)

I'd say Notre Dame has a legitimate claim to ten national titles.

I'd say that 1966 while legit is shameful. Bama goes undefeated with having won the title the previous year would be a shoe-in these days. ND ties MSU and then won't play in a bowl game. That title is tainted big time. But thats JMO.

The two other teams mentioned in this thread:

Alabama

Alabama is listed as having 12 consensus national titles. Of those, there are three that I would call into question.

-1941 (Of the 13 outlets that recognized champions, only one selected Alabama. Minnesota was the overwhelming recognized champion by 10 of the 13, and were undefeated compared with Alabama which finished 9-2)

-1964 (Alabama recognized by 4 of 15 outlets, equal to Notre Dame and 2 less than Arkansas. Arkansas was the only team to finish the regular and bowl season undefeated. Alabama lost in the Orange Bowl to Texas. The coaches and AP both recognize Alabama as the champions; both votes came before the bowls)

-1973 (As mentioned in the Notre Dame section, Alabama received the coaches' poll national title on the strength of its vote before the bowl games. Alabama lost to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl)

I would say there is legitimate reason to discount all three of those, which would leave 'Bama with 9. Legitimately, I think they should only be able to claim 11.

USC

USC is recognized as having 11 consensus national championships. Of those, I'd call three into question.

-1928 (1 out of 9 outlets recognized USC champions. 8 others gave Georgia Tech the nod)

-1939 (1 out of 13 outlets recognized USC champions. Texas A&M is recognized by 10, including the AP)
