Grant County 93 Walton-Verona 75

Featured Replies

Wow, somewhat of a surprise.

The Braves led almost the whole way. Walton tried to match their intensity, but Grant was just too much. The 1st Quarter was a little closer, but WV was down I think 8 at halftime and never got to within 5. Lot of fouls called in the 3rd Quarter, I think both teams were in the double bonus going into the 4th. Walton shot free throws really well if I'm not mistaken.

No surprise here. Game was in Dry Ridge and the Braves had the best player on the floor. I believe Grant earned the top seed in the 32nd District Tournament.

Who was the best player for Grant?

I find it hard to believe that the 32nd doesn’t play a round robin within the District to decide seeding.
Not saying Grant couldn’t have won at WV or SK, but they basically got the 1 seed by beat both those teams on their home floor.

Last year they had to play both on Simon Kenton and Walton`s home court and they wound up the third seed. So I guess it all works out.

Only one 8th Region district - the 31st - does a round-robin seeding.

Tremendous win for Grant County, who continues to impress.   Any doubts that the Braves were more than a one-man team should be firmly quashed by now.....

Their emergence as the top team in District 32 is even more impressive when you consider that they lost their star returning PG before the season to a transfer, only to see their backup PG (the coach's son) lost for the season via injury.....

Hats off to Coach Joe Utter and the job his crew is doing in Dry Ridge!

They used to. I like it better. The way it is now, there have been several years where the Grant/Walton game was of absolutely no significance because both teams lost to SK and both teams beat Williamstown earlier in the season.

KHSAA website now says score was 90-74.....still, an impressive margin.

Grant incredible shooting night.....64% from the floor overall.....9 of 17 (53%) threes.....25 of 30 at the line (83%).

Interestingly, though, despite the presence of Dylan Hammonds inside - perhaps the best rebounder in the 8th Region (he had 27 points / 13 rebounds....another double-double....yawn), and an overall size advantage, Grant didn't command a huge advantage on the glass (Grant 25-23).

Lots of fouls....both teams shot FTs really well, and both made 25 FTs.   Grant shot 30 FTA; WV 35.

Grant with more scorers, though....Hammonds 27, Ziegler 26, Breeden 13, Scalf 11 - and the four shot a combined 16 of 20 inside the arc, 9 of 16 outside the arc, and 19 of 22 at the line.....

Smithers again leading WV, with 23 points, but he hit just 5 of 15 shots.   He was 12 of 14 at the line, though.    Christy with 15 and Gutman with 10 for WV.....
