Mark was a tremendous athlete, great at every sport. The coach when he quit was Rob Hall.

I always heard David Gaunce was awesome, played with Bloomfield. Chad Mefford was a great player in the mid 90s.

That's the real story.

 

It is always presented as him not being on any team his soph year.

While I've also heard Gaunce was a great player on the hardwood, I've also heard that baseball was where he really shined.

I think he got drafted and played for awhile in the minors.

Was good enough to get scholarship to Florida State. I think he came into his own as Junior and Senior.

You might want to consider a guy name Bob Jones in the mix from the late 50s early 60's.

Not sure if anyone listed Campbell County players - but I'm a big fan of the 1985 squad. They didn't get out of the region - losing in Semi's to Dinn's Boone Co. squad on a last second CHARGE call on Chris Kerns - but that team was SOLID top to bottom. Chris Kerns was high school version of Wes Unseld. He was a bull and had a nose for the ball. We had NO answer for Chris Kerns. Gary Jolly was a great point guard and even better personality and spirit. Franzen was a great elegant player/shooter and talent and Whitford in the middle could jump out of the gym. I may be forgetting someone from that squad - but they were great. In Famous Recipe that year '85, Highlands opened with an emotion-packed upset of top ranked Scott County (i think) and the next day the Camels CRUSHED HHS. Net, put Chris Kernsy on that Campbell team.

Didn't Cowens get cut one year in high school? Not a great high school player.

 

From what I could dig up. Had decent stats his jr and sr seasons and was a rebounding machine. Pretty sure team mate Tim Barrow went to Florida State with him. Also Joe Nadicksbernd was a year younger.
