No all-time teams can be named without including the following:

 

Ashland: Earl Adkins (Ashland's only Mr. Basketball and a member of 1958 UK National Champions).

 

Boyd County: Steve Towler (Take a look at his jersey hanging on the wall in the BCMS gymnasium. It is there for a reason.).

 

Russell: Mickey Sydenstricker (Ask Marvin Meredith if you think I am wrong.).

 

Ashland is particularly difficult because of its storied history. I think that any Ashland team must include Earl Adkins, Ellis Johnson, Larry Conley, and Harold Sergent. The fifth player, in my mind, would have to be George Carroll.

 

I can't think of anyone from Ashland who could shoot like Carroll. The only other area player who could shoot with Carroll was Sydenstricker at Russell.

 

I realize that my list goes back a number of years. However, these are the guys who actually built that tradition that is referred to by all the Ashlanders and that tradition was built on Lexington Avenue.

As for Rose Hill, Mayo, Walker, and Dawson are obvious. Saihou Jassey attended and graduated from Rose Hill although KHSAA didn't allow him to play. He still made the Kentucky all-star team and is now playing for Bradley University. Euton and Jackson will probably be worthy additions to the team although they are only freshmen.

 

I would also add Jamaal Williams (nice color picture of him on the front page of the Huntington Herald Dispatch dunking the ball for HHS).

 

All in all, give me a team made up of the above seven, throw in Jonathan VanHoose, Alex Barker, and Zack Gillum, and I'll put that team against any other group from any other 16th Region school.

Corey Grace was (and still is) an absolute beast. The problem is his abilities & Coach Tieman's style didn't mesh all that well.

 

Switch TJ and Purdon and I'm with you.

 

TJ may be the better all around player, but Purdon has over 1,500 points. After this season (his career at CCH) it'll be easier for me to put TJ in the starting lineup.

P.J. Thelen. He had quite a few NBA tryouts but never quite made it. No doubt one of the best players to come from Covington Catholic, but from what I understand he was much better after high school.

Saw him out at a local Gentlemen's Establishment a couple of months back and he said him and Tony Williams were still playing together over there and that they were having a pretty good time.

 

He was only at Doss for his Junior and Senior years but when he stepped on the floor you kinda knew something exciting was gonna happen.

In front of Bill Nolte???? Surely you jest. Thompson was barely able to play professionally (Europe and South America, I believe) for a decade or so.

 

Nolte, on the other hand, played well into his 40's at the YMCA, drafting some of the finest talent that the area had to offer.
