You're right, and I meant to put him on the list as well. I'd put him on and take Nestheide off. The problem with this thread is whether or not you need to make a "team". If you're listing the top 5 - 10 players, then Nestheide isn't on the list. If you want to put together the best team, then I think he deserves to be mentioned. I can only imagine how effective he'd be with the type of players that they had back in the late '60's.

I thought of George Schloemer too right away! How about Richard Derkson? John VonLehman? Jim Rippe? So many great players in the 5 straight regional champion run!

How far back does your SHDHS b-ball knowledge go?

Not too far it seems! Bucky Steffen is mentioned, but I can think a few other greats. How about Jim Henghold, Dave Otte, Kevin Timon, Gerard Koop and the Holzderber brothers.

Yea george schloemer was only voted top 40 player overall, I would have to think he be in Cov Cath all time top 5.

Owensboro Red Devils

1) Cliff Hagan-Played for Adolph Rupp and the University of Kentucky. Was arguably one of the best ever at UK. Won championships at OHS, UK, and the NBA.

 

2)Kenny "Doc" Higgs-Scored 1,833 points as a Red Devil. Went on to star at LSU and currently ranks 6th on the Tigers all-time scoring list. He also ranks 1st in several assist record catagoies for LSU. He went on to play for the Cleveland Cavs, and actually scored more points at LSU then he did at OHS.

 

3)Randy Embry-Was the 1961 Kentucky Mr. Basketball. Finished his career at OHS with 1,610 points. Went on to play for Adolph Rupp at UK and was chosen team captain his senior year. He also coached the Red Devils to the 80' state title and won over 550 games as a coach.

 

4)Bobby Watson-Was a standout on the basketball court for OHS as well as on the sidelines where he amassed over 500 victories as coach of the Red Devils winning the 72' state title. He also played for coach Adolph Rupp at UK where he was selected 1st team all SEC two years in a row and in 52' selected to the all SEC tourney team. FWIW he will almost always be last on UK's 1000 point club with 1001 points as a Wildcat.

 

5)Jerry Thruston-Was selected as Mr. Basketball in 1972 when he lead OHS to the 72' state title. He went on to play college ball at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and scored over 1000 points for the Bears. He also had a short stint with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA.

 

Honorable Mention

Brandon Davenport-1997 Kentucky Mr. Basketball. Attended Morehead State, but transferred to Lindsey Wilson. Scored 1,702 points for OHS, and had 15 assist in one game.

 

James Douglas-Led OHS to the 92' Final Four, and finished with 1,439 points as a Red Devil. Attended the the University of New Orleans and led the Privateers to the 96' NCAA tourney on a last second jumper in the finals of the Sun Belt Conference tourney. Played professionally in Europe

 

Lamar Owen-Scored over 1,250 points as a Red Devil. After 2 years at Wabash Valley JUCO went on to Southern Illinois where he was voted the Missouri Valley Conference 6th man of the year. The Salukies went to the NCAA tourney both years and Lamar now plays professionally in Europe.

 

Rod Drake-After leading OHS to the 80' state title and scoring over 1000 points he took his talents to Kentucky Wesleyan College and starred for the Panthers. He played professionally in Holland.

Well I'm a graduate of 2001 team but know just a little about the teams in the late 90's. I hear great things about Bucky Steffen so I know to include hime but maybe you could help me out with a team since I don't know as much?

 

I actually think this team is pretty well put together though.
