I had a mullet in high school and my coach hated it but never made me cut it. It was the 80's...what can I say.

Business on top.. party in the rear is what i think they used to call the mullets. We had another guy who looked 30 wiht a mustache and long hair, he was about 6'3 240, nicknamed the ICEMAN. Our team photo was pretty hilarious as I just peeked in the old yearbook.

 

Couldnt have been any worse than guys from the 70's/early 80's and their 3striped socks pulled up to their knees, bikini style shorts and tight tanktops. :banana:

In football, we were reqired to be clean shaven (hair was your own business) until my senior year. With the ban lifted, I immediatly sprouted a pair of mutton chops, and we got better... coincidence? I think not. :lol:

 

I understand the desire to ask players to dress nicely (I agree to a certain extent, but suit and tie seems silly in a world where so many businesses have more casual standards) but the clean shaven/short hair thing is obviously military holdover, and I don't think we really should approach high school sports as a martial training program. That's what the JROTC is for.

Get serious. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Follow the rules as to dress (shirt tucked in) and play the game. Short hair or long never won a ballgame. I personally prefer short hair and clean cut, but those are my preferences. Kids have different styles from generation to generation. Let's talk about something that has to do with basketball.

Do you think that it can detract from the persona of the team? He have a kid on our basketball team with a small mohawk.

I am 100% in favor of the clean shaven/short hair/well dressed rule/theory. Imo it reflects on your school and community in how you look and conduct yourselves, especially on the road. I do know that Marvin Meridith - Hall of Fame Russell basketball coach had his teams in blazers/ties and clean shaven at all times.

Thread says "clean shaven or not". I believe in the team concept where the coach is the general. Nothing outrageous. Everyone wears their uniform the same, same socks, undershirt if necessary, shoes, etc. Everyone should be clean shaven, hair short/neat, prefer no tattoos. When arriving off bus to games, players should all have same type of school warm-up attire or jacket and tie. If you want to stand out, do it on the court with the basketball and your teammates.

I can remember a time when you HAD to be clean shaven and short hair to play on some high school teams....Do you think that most coaches dont care anymore, or has times just changed drastically? What are your thoughts.......

 

Had to be shaved & have a short hair cut before each game for the coach I played for a couple years ago. We also had to wear khakis, dress shirt, tie & a blazer.

Things ain't like they used to be and kids are not either. I'm with you guys, but we must be a little more realistic. Coaches just can't turn kids into robots liked they used to do with us. Might be better if they could but this generation is different. I would hate to lose good kids and players because a coach did not like their haircut, beard or tattoo. Stereotypes are as bad as racism.

I'd like to think that society benefits when you can't turn people into robots. Maybe that's just me.

My high school coach had a first class, old fashioned style when it came to how you looked. For four years we had to have short hair, no facial hair, no piercings, and we had to have our shirts tucked in. We had to arrive and leave home games wearing a shirt and tie. Not to mention we had to say "yes sir" and no sir" everytime we were spoken to.

I agree with your coach. I know this it sounds "extreme" but some of these post/ideas to me as far you have to slack or adjust to these times is what is wrong with a lot (not all) of kids today and society in general. Just seems to be a trend of more and more lack of respect for anything or anyone. JMO (and I realize that I am Old School but I prefer it that way).

:laugh: :laugh: :laugh: I can attest to that! The Ramblers in that year were the only b.b. team in the state that never touched a b.b. in practice:eek: . All practice was nothing but running. We had the best track team in the state..............to bad the sport was basketball.:lol:

It was never about the beauty, nor were coaches making fashion statements. It was all about the discipline...and that molds a team and wins games.

Generally speaking, respect is the main thing that kids today lack in their character.
