I’ve often wondered what the objective is for JV games. Is it to win the game or is it simply to get younger players valuable game experience?  Some schools play a lot of juniors on the JV so obviously they want to win the game. Other schools have “Froshmore” teams who want to get their younger players as many reps before they get to the varsity level. I suppose there isn’t a right answer; it’s the varsity HC’s personal preference on what he is trying to accomplish.

I think the philosophy of JV at St. X has evolved over the last 10 years. During the Coach Glaser era very few juniors played JV, but Coach Wallace has played more juniors especially juniors who may be buried on the varsity depth chart who he envisions being a contributor as a senior. JV games are what they are, a way to get game reps for those players who don't get many on Friday nights.

Alot of the Froshmore teams seem to be driven by the numbers game. For schools that don't have enough kids to have a "true" freshman team. Many JCPS schools are like that now and it is a great way to get younger kids in the game.

I don't think this is automatically the case for programs that play juniors. A lot of the times, especially in programs with huge numbers, it will be like @LongTimeReader described, playing juniors who are buried on the varsity depth chart to get them reps.

As someone who played in a tiny program (fewer than 30 kids total), often times we had to play juniors on JV, even juniors who would play on Friday, simply to be able to field a JV team.

@Bear3hit the nail on the head, the purpose of JV is different at every school.

Did X play Jrs on the JV or did T? I would think that these programs want to win this game. Minus playing a starter it would be all hands on deck. I would think, for the sake of attrition you play Jrs in JV that you hope to contribute somewhere down the line on Fridays.  It would be hard for me to look at kids that are on the fringe and not play them because they are a JR. Isn't there am 8 quarter rule in KY?

I think both teams played a mix of juniors and sophomores. X & T QB's were sophomores. I know X RB's were sophomores. Trinity's varsity D starts 6 sophomores so I would think some juniors would be playing on D for JV team. Probably see some juniors on line because most teams don't have a lot of O-lineman. St. X varsity O-line starts two sophomores so probably have some juniors on JV O-line. With injuries on X varsity D means going to be less kids available for JV. Once those guys comeback from injury maybe few more kids available for JV.
