Top 5 Titans and Centurions kick off district play in style

Series History: Tied at 2-2

Table Setter: As far as potential goes, district play couldn't get off on a better foot than this clash of top 3A contenders. The series is something fresh and new; the Titans and Centurions have only met four times, all coming in the last two years. Mercer County has won the regular season game both years, while CAL has exacted revenge in the more coveted playoff rematches. Two more games this year is a distinct possibility, but first things first…

Mercer County notched one of the biggest wins for any 3A team so far this season by edging then 5A #6 Southwestern in Harrodsburg. The Titans narrowly avoided defeat when a last second Warriors field goal missed left. One of the biggest takeaways from this game was the defensive effort from Mercer County to hold in check the state's top scoring offense. We'll find out how well that defense travels this week, as the Titans head northwest into the lion's den of Louisville.

No late game drama was needed to decide CAL's fate against Owensboro Catholic last week. The Centurions pounced on the Aces early and often, scoring 49 first half points largely behind the offensive and defensive efforts of Easton Messer, who totalled four scores on the night. Messer, who holds a handful of D1 offers, was a major force for CAL in both meetings with Mercer County last year.

CAL has an outstanding football program. Hunter Cantwell is one of the finest young men and head football coaches in the state of Kentucky. Huge challenge for us. We have a ton of respect for the Centurions. Excited for Friday night.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they split the two games as there will undoubtedly be two so winning this game wouldn’t be cause for to much celebration because the job won’t be complete.

That is an awesome compliment and I agree with the words about Cantwell.  I know the respect goes both ways and he has spoken early and often about the talent Mercer County has and the challenge it will be to beat them.   Looking forward to a well played match up between these two tough teams!
