Harrodsburg all-time

Featured Replies

Contemplate this list of distinguished H-burg alumni. Talk about a program that put out some players! I'd say I'm leaving out some significant ones too. You guys help me fill in the blanks:

Craig Yeast -- WR at UK (brief stint in NFL, now CFL)

Dennis Johnson -- DE at UK (brief stint in NFL)

Jason Dunn -- EKU (Long career in NFL as TE)

Venus Meaux -- Starter on defense at UK

Julius Yeast -- Signed with Ohio State

Derrick Johnson -- Played at UK

Patrick Bugg -- Current All-American at EKU

Mark Dunn -- Starting RB at EKU

Henry Parks -- Started RB at UK

Donald Smith -- Started RB at WKU

Gus Parks -- EKU

Nick Yeast -- EKU

Bo Yeast -- ?? Did he play college football ??

I've surely left out someone else who went on to play D1 -- help me.

Will be surprised if Brandon Ford and Cory Jackson off this year's team do not play somewhere.

Just to kind of fill those in with more: Nicky Yeast was the starting FB and Gus Parks the starting DB on EKU's 1982 National Championship squad (13-0) that featured Tuck Woolum, Steve Bird and Tron Armstrong. If memory serves Nick scored the winning TD in their semi-final win over Tennessee State with Richard Dent and Gus blocked an early FG by Delaware in the Title game that was returned for a TD to fuel Eastern's win. :thumb:

I believe that is why they never won it all.

He didn't run the old, old single wing with all the faking and misdirection (though they did run some). Harrodsburg tried to run power and also capture the ends with their speed. The extra lead blockers allowed a lot of hit at the point of attack. The problem was it was also very predictable and landlocked the way Alvis ran it.

Agreed. The Harrodsburg single-wing had trouble with speedy, athletic defenses.

I also felt that had real problems with defenses that had tough ends/corners that would break up the blocking and get to the back. At Boyle some of the success Rall had against Alvis was because he had DE's that blew up the power sweeps and off tackles by just holding their ground.

The biggest example of what you said Network is Frankfort. Alvis' 2 best teams by sheer talent were '76 and '77. (Henry and Gus Parks, Nick Yeast, Venus Meaux) Frankfort had just as much quickness and a Great D Line that matched Harrodsburg's talent well. Raymond Webb always had them ready and beat them both years in the A Regional when the Pioneers were ranked #1 going into the playoffs.

Ditto at Lincoln County. Snooky Wooldridge was 4-0 against Harrodsburg and he always had big, well-coached Defensive Ends.

On the opposite end of that, Garrard County annually struggled with Harrodsburg in the 1990s because of a lack of quality defensive end play. Keep in mind that at this time, Garrard County was widely regarded as one of the top 5-10 Class A programs in the state. They were strong at linebacker, but not at end. Also, Coach Jerry Perry was fairly predictable in his play calling, which made for some low scoring affairs. Here are Garrard/Harrodsburg results from Perry's tenure:

1990- Garrard 15, Harrodsburg 13

1991- Harrodsburg 14, Garrard 6

1992- Harrodsburg 23, Garrard 0

1993- Garrard 13, Harrodsburg 12

1994- Harrodsburg 29, Garrard 21

1995- Harrodsburg 17, Garrard 6

1995- Harrodsburg 14, Garrard 6 (Playoffs- Regional Final)

1996- Harrodsburg 14, Garrard 6

I know this is the Harrodsburg thread but you ought to post a thread on the Garrard records for all time. I know they had a couple of good teams in the 60's, one very good team under Sam Burke with Wilbur Dunn and the Perry teams were pretty good as well.

I would like to see that, too. Seems like GC's all-time record is under .500 but they have had some good teams.

If they did not have good end play then how come the scoring was so low? I thought it was said that good end play was what slowed them down. Also i was looking through some of the coaches records recently from Garrard and saw that Perry was 65-18 over a seven yr. period that he was their. 6 of those 18 losses came at the hands of the Hogs. Also i saw that they scored alot of points during this time. Its hard for me to understand how the offense was predictable. Was it predictable when they beat the likes of Beechwood,Bardstown etc?

If my memory is correct, I was at the '76 game, when the H-burg center snapped it over Henry's head, to give Frankfort the win. It was one of the coldest games I had ever been to.

That would have been their most talented team if Nicky Yeast had not broken his leg early in the year and been lost for the season. Their only loss in the regular season was to Boyle County on a "hook and lateral" play at the end.

Imagine a healthy Yeast (Tank) with Henry Parks, Venus Meaux and Gus Parks. :scared:

I was also at the Boyle game, we were off that day (Mercer) and we went over to watch. Man that was a great game. I beleive the next year H-burg beat them really, really bad.

60-0. Alvis ran it up and it was one of those games that was burned in your psyche forever. I was a frosh that year. The interesting thing was that Boyle team rebounded to win the District and upset then #1 AAA Danville in the season finale.

The next three years Harrodsburg never scored on us. I remember when we went ahead 27-0 on them my Senior year I looked at one of the Harrodsburg players and yelled, "Run it up!" Ahhh, memories.

Do you remember in 75 when a Mercer player broke lose on a kickoff return and Henry Parks ran over him like a freight train on about the Harrodsburg 35? The Mercer player had 15-20 yards on everyone. It didn't take Henry Parks long to make up the difference.

It's good to have those guys on the same team now!

I also remember a young man bringing us water out. We might not have been the best team, but we sure had a lot of fun and made good memories.

Have a good Christmas and tell your dad hello for me.

Your dad came to a play-off game, and me and several other ex-players had a good trip down memory lane with him.

I to remember the Harrodsburg games from 1978-1981. This was a must win

for the coaches. I can remember Coach Young leading the chat on the bus driving down to the football field from the Harrodsburg school. With the windows down and and in soft voice saying "hogs" ''hogs" "hogs"

Man I can't believe I'm getting to old. To me the 40 yard dash is to run to fridge and make a sandwich before the commercial is over now. "Rise and Shine" is on the menu at Bob Evans now.
