Speeding tickets

Featured Replies

My brother once got two speeding tickets within about 15 minutes of each other. In fact, he was reading the first one and not paying attention to his driving when he was pulled over for the second one.

 That sucks.

I finally got my first one about 2 months ago. It was around 1am when I was coming home from work. Was doing 81 in a 65. It was in Ohio though so it only costed me 92 dollars.

In Kentucky, you do not get to see the radar, you do not have to sign the ticket, you do not pass Go, you do not collect $200.

My advice to anyone pulled over is to not make any statements in response to "do you know how fast you were going," "where are you headed," etc. You have a 5th Amendment right, even on speeding tickets.

Unless you are on a "limited access highway" (read freeway or parkway) doing less than 15 MPH over, ANY speeding ticket is going to cost you points on your drivers record, at least 3. For speeding 15 MPH or more over in any event, its going to cost you 6 points. If you are more than 25 MPH over, you lose your license for 90 days. You are NEVER advised by either officer or paperwork that when you simply "pay," your fine, you are actually pleading guilty and the points go directly on your record.

When points go on your record for a moving violation, the insurance companies, which ALL run your record once a year, will catch it and the average rise in insurance costs on a single auto policy is over $230. For multiple cars, it goes up an average of $410.

It is true that "traffic school" will keep points off your record, and for a 6 pt. or greater violation, I'd use it. You get one traffic school per calendar year. However, most prosecutors around the state will not generally agree to traffic school if they start seeing a lot of speeding tickets on your record.

My recommendation is to pay $100-$200 and hire a lawyer. The cost of hiring one will generally be less than the money you will lose now and in the future if your insurance rates rise. The lawyer "generally" can negotiate an amendment of your ticket. It saves you from having to appear in court, and you can save your traffic school for in the event something more serious occurs.

Just my, concededly biased, two cents.

First lawyer I have ever seen to ONLY charge 2 cents for legal advice.:D

I got pulled over for my 5th time going almost as fast as I was when I got my only ticket. I told the officer I was headed back to UK, which I was, and I guess that was enough for him to let me go. 1/5 getting a ticket. I rock.
