Comments from BCS voters that chose Florida

Featured Replies

I have never taken away Florida's claim to the Title Game. I will ALWAYS be convinced, however, that it was more because of a USC loss and not the Arkansas win. The majority of voters didn't want a rematch. I get that. But they got the team to move ahead of UM wrong last week, and it became a sham this week. I'm just calling a spade a spade...

 Youve been reaching for days now. Your mad at the voters, your mad at Tressel, your clinging to every thought about why Michigan may have got hosed. Its over man, nothing can be done about it.

I think it's as simple as this, really. Michigan had their chance to beat OSU and failed. If Michigan beats OSU second time around, so what? They're even. Process of elimination leads to Florida who has every right to be in this game. Honestly, I feel like Florida is no doubt a better team than Michigan. Go Gators.

You subscribe to one of the two prevailing thoughts. I have no doubt that the thought of a split between UM and OSU weighed heavily in the minds of some/many voters. Like it or not, UM winning the rematch would leave a sour taste with a lot of folks.

While I won't go the "no doubt a better team" route, I do think their schedule and the resulting wins give them a slight edge over the Blue.

and I don't think you get mulligans in college football.

That's great and IMO that sums it all up.

"If there's a viable alternative, I stay away from a rematch and I think Florida gives them a viable alternative."

That's all that needs to be said right there. Just wanted to avoid the rematch. Simple as that. People that say otherwise are fooling themselves.

Reaching? Turn on the TV or check a national web site. There are plenty out there on both sides of the isle. Maybe you missed it, but I'm not knocking Florida's claim to be where they are. They lost once and played a tough schedule. Same as UM.

And that comment is a riot from you. You've obviously never defended UK when something goes sour for the Cats...

"If you beat a team one time, why do they get the national championship if they win the second time?" said Earle Bruce, the former Ohio State coach who votes in the Harris Interactive poll and moved Florida ahead of Michigan. "I mean, they've already played one time and lost."
Yeah, the game was played at Columbus ... this time, it would be at a neutral site.

"At the end of the day, Florida won its conference championship. Michigan did not," said Harris poll voter Ray Melick of the Birmingham News. "Because there's not a playoff, I think a conference champion ought to carry more weight than a conference runner-up at the BCS conference level."
I guess Florida is just lucky that they're not in the same conference as Ohio State, then.

"In my heart of hearts, I believe that neither Ohio State or Michigan could get through Florida's schedule with only one loss."
Now there is a logical argument. I'm not sure I agree with it, but it's a reasonable point.

"Michigan had its shot," said Harris voter Joe Biddle of The Tennessean. "If you replayed that game it would be nothing more than a Big Ten championship - and I don't think you get mulligans in college football.

"If there's a viable alternative, I stay away from a rematch and I think Florida gives them a viable alternative."

Joe Biddle, for one thing, is an idiot. Wait ... Florida lost to Auburn, right? So why are they getting a mulligan?

And who cares if it amounts to another Big Ten championship? If the two best teams are in the Big Ten, they should meet again for the national title.

Ok like Jim Rome said on his show today, OSU and Michigan are #1 and #2. But OSU and Florida are more deserving. I just still find it hard to agree with this for two reasons. One Michigan's only loss to the #1 team OSU, Florida's loss to Auburn. Second Florida gets more points in the BCS for having a SEC championship game. This is why every conference needs a championship game, or no one has one. I hate to see teams get jammed at the end of the year because of the BCS.

I don't buy the "they won their conference" logic. Did the guy vote Boise State #3?

Are you serious? Boise State didn't win the SEC or any conference near the level of the SEC, did they?

I will say it's a sham the way it went down but Florida is more than deserving to play in that title game.

I think Florida is the team that deserves the shot. Any SEC team with that schedule that finishes with ONE loss, deserves a spot in the National Championship...unless of course there are two top teams with 0 losses.

I guess Florida is just lucky that they're not in the same conference as Ohio State

Florida lost to Auburn, right? So why are they getting a mulligan?

No.. OSU and UM are lucky that Florida isn't in their conference! :p

While I'd love to see two SEC schools fight for the title, the ONLY reasonable time to expect it would be an undefeated and a 1 loss SEC team in the title game when all other major conference teams have 2+ losses.

And Florida isn't throwing a hissy fit wanting to play Auburn again, so they're not wanting a mulligan.

I think what he's saying is, if we're going to give so much importance to conference championships, then it should be all the conference champs, then everyone else. Because that's essentially what they're saying now.......

It was such a big deal for Jim Walden, a former Washington State head coach, that he picked Florida No. 1 in the Harris poll, calling Florida's schedule "murderous."

"In my heart of hearts, I believe that neither Ohio State or Michigan could get through Florida's schedule with only one loss."

And this guy wins the biggest idiot of all. How do you have a team that is clearly the consensus #1 in the country, for the entire season, and then you vote a team, WITH A LOSS, ahead of them? All any of these quotes confirm is that coaches have absolutely no business deciding who gets to play in the national title game. I don't care what the guy "believes", don't you have to reward a team for making it though the season undefeated in a major conference? Heck, lets just throw out wins and losses then. We all know that LSU is the best team in the SEC, just put them in the title game. Ridiculous.

No.. they're saying the Big11 runner-up isn't better than the SEC champion.

As far as BSU.. I'd LOVE to see them in a playoff. I don't feel too bad for them though. They know the system, and know the quality of opponents they need to schedule in order to make a serious claim on the BCS.

My point exactly. They are saying, first, that you have to win your conference to be in the title game, and second, that the Big 10 runner up can NEVER be better than the SEC champion(and vice versa). I have a problem with that. Neither are in the rules for the BCS, nor should they be IMO, but surely don't make it up as you go.
