January 1, 20206 yr Author That is odd that they don't give you any vacation time in the new job. Can you negotiate that? Also, the details on the 401k and match are more important. You say 50% and 25% match but what percent do they match up to? I have submitted a request with the recruiter/hr to ask for at least some vacation time and/or more money to compensate the difference. Also 401k match is up to those amounts.
January 1, 20206 yr Author I would take a totally different approach. I am looking at your "Monday" off in your current position. I would ask myself on how I could use that Monday to either generate additional income or improve myself so that my future outcome would be better than choice 1 or choice 2. An example of generating additional income might be to drive Uber that day. Improving myself might be taking some online courses to prepare for an even better career change or it might be starting a home based business of some sort. That extra 24 hours that you have in your current position that you wouldn't have in the new position is a very valuable asset. A temporary sacrifice in your current lifestyle could pay big dividends later on. The Monday’s off are really nice and makes weekends something to look forward to. I get a lot accomplished on Monday’s around the house and business. We own a local business so additional income is not a factor. I also have 3 degrees so online classes are not needed.

January 1, 20206 yr The Monday’s off are really nice and makes weekends something to look forward to. I get a lot accomplished on Monday’s around the house and business. We own a local business so additional income is not a factor. I also have 3 degrees so online classes are not needed. OK, that go with your heart on your choice. Most people I counsel with have too much "wage mentality" instead of "entrepreneur mentality". It takes the latter to develop the lifestyle that we all want. I did not know your background. I personally would hate third shift work and would do everything in my power to get out of that situation. I have been working a long time to think bigger in order to get out of the traditional thought processes that most people have. Never stop learning! There is always room for improving one's self. Get together with someone you trust. Not necessarily your best friend, but someone who will tell you want you need to hear. Be willing to lay out your entire situation (personal, work, financial, leisure, etc) in order to determine short-term and long-term plans, goals and dreams.

January 2, 20206 yr No there’s a 401k yearly limit of $19k. So my work would match $9,500 I have never heard of a match like that. Examples of what it usually is are 50% up to 6% of salary or 25% up to 5% of salary.
January 2, 20206 yr I consider it 1st shift, I just start early. I am really working for the benefits for the family. If working for the benefits for the family, that 401k match is crazy awesome and I would make sure to be taking advantage of that as much as you possibly can. If you are leaning towards the new opportunity, I would leverage your current benefits to maximize the new offering. In my limited experience, vacation is an easy bargaining chip for them to give up to get you on board if they want you.

Also able to work out up to another week of vacation or use it days off as needed. One thing that stuck out to me was the opportunities for advancement within the company. Something to look forward to being that at my age my body might not hold up till retirement. Also the company is growing a ton right now and the turnover is very low compared to my current company.
