Has Ryle underachieved?

Featured Replies

Would anyone think that Ryle has underachieved under this staff?

Absolutely!!! Since Morgan left the staff still spent all summer thinking they could run a spread offense instead of make adjustments to their strengths!! Takes them 1 to 2 games in to realize they don't have a QB that can run a spread. Then left running same 5 plays all year that everyone in stands could see coming.

Don't know much about the staff at Ryle but "Systems" must adapt to the personnel, not the opposite.

A quick look at KHSAA tells me that they've only had one decent playoff run in the last several years. Last year and in 2017, their win/loss record has been average-below average. Basketball has struggled the last 6 season or so and their baseball team has also lost a ton of games.

Do they keep picking bad coaches for all these sports or is their simply not an abundance of talent going through the school?

Has the opening of Cooper hurt their athletic prowess?

Ryle had 3 outstanding classes in a row (2015-2017), they really haven't had that many great football players gathered together since. Now the next few years might get closer to those years but maybe not.

Do they keep picking bad coaches for all these sports or is their simply not an abundance of talent going through the school?

In some sports, yes, their choices of head coach (some gone, some current) have been head-scratchers. However, in Baseball, that was absolutely not the case, they had a great one in Pat Roesel and the parents finally beat him into submission.

A decent playoff run in 2017 and last year? I am pretty sure they have lost in the 1st round the last 3 years.

With so many schools being so close together in Boone County. I do think it makes it hard for schools to string top classes together. Meaning you may get a strong class that is good up front, but maybe not as strong at the skill spot. Or vice versa a strong skill group, but not as strong up front. When usually one of the other schools in the district has the opposite in that class. So having so many schools so close together, does make it hard to stack a class together that is strong both up front and at the skill position group.

The key being the PARENTS beat him into submission.

Wouldn’t expectations have to be high to underachieve?

The defense spent way too much time on the field due to having 1 legitimate threat on the offensive side of the ball. Stuff England and most teams gave themselves a chance to win. A .500 team at best. “They are who we thought they were”.

Going into the season, I thought they were a 6-4 team but key injuries to QB Lyons and 2-way threat E.Cusick turned them into the 5-5 team that they were.

Do not always agree with future coach, but the point about talent being spread out is valid. I think all of the schools will have a turn and make a run.....even Boone. I just think it will be next to impossible for a team in that county to ever win it all because of classification and the spread of all the talented kids.

Difficult, yes, impossible, no. It was just 3 seasons ago that Ryle was 2 points away from winning a regional title and it wasn't that long ago that Cooper was the State runner-up as well as winners of 2 regional titles along the way in the last 7 years. Yes, I concur, the spreading of talent among the 4 schools in Boone Co. makes it difficult to consistently be a contender. I look at this as glass half full in Boone Co. as this will ALWAYS be cyclical in nature for these 4 high schools.

With the above stated, I will say that coaches need to evaluate the talent that they have and utilize it to the best of their ability. These 4 schools cannot afford to be on "system-lock" thinking that it's "plug and play". If the players don't fit your system......change your system.

That 2016 Ryle team was really the best of the best in the county but if they would have had a few of the Cooper and Conner kids from that senior group as well, they would have been near impossible to stop.

Injuries really hurt that team down the stretch.
