What mountain teams will be a force next season.

I think you're being rather elitist here...

Lawrence Co., Paintsville, and Pikeville are each traditional P-burg rivalries. These teams have continued to play each other when they were good, bad, and even ugly. :thumb:

As far as those teams being "down"... Pikeville isn't (inconsistant maybe, but NOT down). Paintsville was rebuilding with a new coach and had lost 20 seniors in '05 (for a small 1A school that was crippling !!). Lawrence Co. was young and still adjusting to its staff.

You shouldn't drop home/away rivalries even if you suspect your opponent might be "down" anyway. The tables almost always turn through the years !! :sssh:

My point was, it makes for a very easy schedule for P'burg...99 out of 100 on here will agree that P'burg will be playing a very easy schedule...

Have you heard P'burg is playing Betsy Layne and South Floyd as well???

I'd heard...but only through sources here.

I could sorta see playing Betsy Layne. That was Coach Derossett's first head coaching job (and the only coach with a winning team there, too). Understandably, he'd have a soft spot for them.

But who knows ? From what I've seen, it wouldn't surprise me if the Floyd Co. Board put a lock on travel miles or even mandated that county schools play each other... :irked:

Corbin will be very dominate in 2A next year. returning everything plus some young faces will play into the picture. There will be alot of experiance on the field. They will be hard to handle.

"very dominant" is a pretty tough goal. Corbin should be loaded, though...

Is Cashen back?

Cashen returns for his senior season with the entire offense back except for one lineman. There may be some kids who started this year who may not start next year due to some young talent coming up. The defense loses three starters.

Johnson Central will definitely be a team to watch next year.

1A - Pikeville, Paintsville, Harlan, Hazard

2A - Corbin, Leslie Co., Middlesboro, Prestonsburg

3A - Somerset, Breathitt Co., Belfry, Sheldon Clark

4A - Bell Co., Rockcastle Co., Lawrence Co. (with luck)

5A - Johnson Central, Clay Co. (with luck)

6A - nobody...

Who should we designate "honorary mountain team" in 6A ?!?

Looks like there will be a lot of good mountain football next year. I got to see Corbin, Somerset, Rockcastle, and Clay play this year. How many of the teams on this list will play each other during the regular season? I know I would like to check some dates and watch a few.

Betsy Layne does play Prestonsburg in week one at Prestonsburg.

Pikeville, Corbin, Bell, Rock all the usual suspects. I'll bet that Whitley will beat Clay next year.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think eventually Letcher Co. Central might grow to the size of a 6A school. If so, they'll be VERY competitive there in the not-too-distant future.

Coach H. Howard is too good a motivator and will get the best kids in the school out, Ben H. is doing good things with an offense unique to these parts, and the facilities there are too good for it not to happen. They're doing things right in developing their JV and Frosh programs too -- making sure those young kids play plenty of games. And that long trip for teams in their district will be a killer in and of itself.

On another note: you wouldn't know it by their finishes, but Corbin has actually been in a "rebuilding" mode the last 2 or 3 years. They lost BIG numbers of their best athletes about 4 or 5 years ago from their younger classes (soccer, etc.). But I've watched their Middle School teams and they have numbers, talent, size, etc.

Corbin's got a tough road ahead if they want to dominate. I think Corbin loses 1 maybe 2 games in the district next year. Depends on where they play Middlesboro. It was a shootout last year at Middlesboro, and they return some big time athletes. If they can find a QB, they'll be a tough out once again. And Lelsie Co. has one of the toughest D-fenses around. They gave up an avg. 13 points per game after spending three quarters of the game on the field due to a mediocre offense. I think both of these teams will give Corbin a run for their money in the district this year. I think this will be one of the most competitive districts in the state in any class.
