Mustangs outlast Pendleton County 20-14 to capture the Battle of US27 trophy for the fourth time in five years.

 

Pendleton scored first on a blocked punt, recovery, touchdown - Block by Blayne Pugh, touchdown scored by Patrich Wright. The two-point conversion was good and that quickly it was 8-0 early on in the second period.

 

Pendleton County returned the favor, as Brossart's Sam Howard intercepted a pass and trotted 35 yards for a Brossart touchdown. Following a failed PAT attempt it was 8-6 Wildcats at the half.

 

The Cats scored on a 67 yard drive to start the second half on an 11 yard keeper by Matthew Campbell, and the Catts led 14-6 with 6:14 to play in the third quarter.

 

Mustangs answer on a 55 yard drive of our own, culminated by a 3 yard run by Trevor Schadler. The two point completion from Leicht to David Govan tied the contest at 14s heading into the final 12 minutes.

 

A Devon Carson interception for the Mustangs led to a Brossart touchdown late in the game, as Leicht orchestrated a 57 yard drive, finishing it off himself with a 4 yard scamper.

 

The Mustangs survive a late-game Pendleton County threat and improve to 6-4 as we complete the regular season.

 

The Mustangs will host Paris next Friday in the Class 1A, District 5 playoffs.

Pendlton County travels to Flemingsburg for a 3A encounter with the Fleming County Panthers.

Brossart is a coaching staff away from being relevant. They are spending a lot of money on the facilities and I suspect the next head coach will be someone who can pull kids away from Campbell and Newcath without saying a word. “If you build it, they will come!”

I feel Coach Wiggins has done a nice job. Pulling those kids away from Campbell costs 7-8k a year and kids from Newport and FT whose families opt for Catholic education are not going to take them south as close as NCC is.

Just wondering if all of southern Kenton Co football guys might find Brossart as an attractive option rather than the northward, congestive commute to CovCath where they might never see the varsity field? Cross country Visalia route is not bad.

I looked on the website of Covington Catholic and there are kids living farther south of BBHS that go to Covcath. Brossart is taking the next steps to compete and win some playoff games. That is not happening from what it looks like with the current staff.

Until they consistently win and play a good schedule not a bunch of cupcakes they won't take players from anyone.

Good grief folks. They just went 7-3 and are in position to win their first ever playoff game. People on here talking about getting “a better coaching staff” and playing a non “cupcake schedule.” Talking about “taking kids” from football programs that have been winning championships for 50-75 years. How about congratulations on the success they’ve had, encouragement to keep improving, and expressing excitement for their facilities that are opening in a couple years?

Great post gchs_uk9! The 'Stangs have done ok in a short time and their new facility will host their first home playoff game this Friday with Paris. I guess in today's athletics nothing is ever enough. The financial commitment of the school community is outstanding. Hearing they will also begin work on an indoor facility in the near future.

I would be interested to see your suggestions for a different coaching staff Youth2019. Most public school coaches are paid significantly more to teach and usually coaching stipends are more. Really don't see any of the "Big Guys" leaving to come there, so I guess you have someone's assistant coming there?

Who do you want them to play- they have to play Bracken, Nicholas County and Paris because they're in their district. They also play Dayton, Bellevue and Ludlow who are all 1 A schools. Frankly I'm happy Brossart still has football after the Khsaa threw them into 2A for a few years which almost made the program fold. The fact that they have a new field is amazing. Hopefully kids that want to play will seize the opportunity to go to Brossart and play. Remember the difference in going to Campbell county and going to Brossart is about $7000 a year. That probably makes a difference for some.

It kind of boggles me why our football coaching staff is under fire here.

 

Nowhere does it say that we built our new athletic complex with the intention of conquering the Northern Kentucky football world.

 

Our intent is to centralize our facilities, and give our football, soccer, track, and eventually softball and baseball teams a true home field. And when building this facility, why not make it state of the art, so long as the resources are available.

If the by-product of this development is increased enrollment, larger team rosters, and the potential to improve our lot in life, so be it.

 

Our football program has used Newport Stadium, Scott High School, and a deteriorating Bob Miller Stadium as our "Home" field since we started varsity football back in 2007. Our soccer players traveled country roads daily to play at Pendery Park in Melbourne, where there is no seating, no scoreboard, and no concession stands nor restroom facilities. Building the MAC is just our way of catching up with ourselves and bringing our sports teams, "back on campus."

 

Back when the KHSAA relegated us to 2-A and the life was draining from our football program, Paul Wiggins came forward, recruited (within our school) kids walking our halls who had played for him when he was our Junior High Colts coach, and basically saved our program. We recognize and appreciate that.

 

While we may project as a "big" 1-A school, our present enrollment is under 300, and half of them are girls. We also have a competitive soccer program, which established a foothold prior to our organization of a football program. Our football roster numbers 26, and when you sustain injuries, you cannot perform to your maximum ability. We do the best we can with what we have to do it with. Moreover, our players, parents, and administration likes this coaching staff. They are a good fit for us. I'm sure that if and when the numbers increase, due to the influence of the MAC, so will our win-loss record and the strength of our schedule reflect that as well. We are a Class 1A football program, playing a 1A schedule that has posted a winning record four of the five years we have been in Class 1A, since facing extinction in 2A. The memories of those four years are still fresh in our memories, so let us enjoy the success we have, with the players that we have, and the coaching staff that is in place, at a nice facility.

 

Don't try to make us something that we are not ready to be.

Sorry but Dayton, Ludlow, HC and Bellevue are cupcakes. If they want to win in the playoffs they're going to have to play better out of district than that. They may get their tails kicked but they'll be a better team for it. They did play Newport which was decent this year. There's Lloyd and New Cath who are both good small school competition. Honestly there's no reason to not play New Cath every year.

The statement is not saying they are not doing a good job. They are getting wins. But it was just said that they hired a Junior high coaching staff to lead the Varsity program. Not saying they have not done good but as a program you have to think bigger and for the future. You should never be satisfied with a 7-3 record. I can remember that staff had some good coaches on it early on and they left. One is at Covcath and the other is at Ryle. Either way I am pumped for them but to be honest this is the most anyone has acknowledged the mustangs all year. Also said in a post earlier it cost 7k to go there. Make it 7500 and pay a big hitter. I don’t know the answers just simply saying if I had kids with what looks to be a beautiful facility, I would want to step up the game and put the pressure on the staff to get more. There is nothing wrong with pushing your employees
