On one hand, Title IX shouldn't matter because these technically would be contracts/arrangements between the athletes and private businesses. Now if schools starting going to the local car dealership to use it as a recruiting advantage, I don't know how that works.

 

I am interested contractually how this will work? Will there be agencies to oversee these deals and negotiate on a players' behalf?

 

I feel like this idea of a coach or athletic department staffer that facilitates these things is where universities are going to have to clamp down. If universities are facilitating these things, that's where Title IX could come into play.

 

Agents seem like an inevitability. Certain players will just need someone to handle the calls, if nothing else.

As marketable as a UK basketball player? No chance. I could potentially see Kash, but I still think at the end of the day if you told a business in Lexington or elsewhere in the state that they could have 1 athlete at UK be a spokesperson for their business they’re going to go with a basketball player 10/10.

 

The only difference might be the fact that the football player is going to be there for 3 years, while the basketball player will be long gone by then. If you think about it, by the time people actually start to truly "know" and recognize a star basketball player at UK, they're only a few months away from the draft. There's a lot more exposure time for a football "star". I just think there would've been more than one person who would've wanted Tim Couch to be their spokesperson. Granted, there's not always going to be that type of player...but, I think there will always be exceptions.

I think everyone is missing the issue. The issue isn't how much will stars make on their side hustle, the issue is that every player will be expecting to have a side hustle of their own. When those don't materialize, you'll see a lot of malcontent players.

 

Another issue that will be bigger than expected is something I mentioned earlier, every player committing to a Power 5 Conference school will think that they deserve money and will be looking for confirmed deals before committing to a school. Kids already have hangers-on in their ears not already giving the best advice. Imagine the hangers-on in a kids ear because someone else is making more money than them. I think we will actually see kids (maybe not many but definitely some) that will get upset and transfer because others are making more than they are on the side.

 

I'm all for athletes being treated like any other student and allowed to earn money, but the mess from unintended consequences will be gigantic.

Agree with the 10/10 comment. But, still maintain Coach Side Hustle will have lots of offers to peddle to recruits.

With the NBA getting rid of one and done in a few years. Then now where you add in players can make some money while in college now. Then chances are we will see more players here longer for basketball.
