I've said this earlier...there were fast kids all over the field from both squads. Jackson played with a separated shoulder, Clark with torn meniscus (PAINFUL!). This game was less about speed and more about guts, heart, and desire.

It is one thing to just have bad judgment on a call and blatantly make the wrong call, it happens ------But to be officiating in a State Championship game and NOT know the rules is another.And where were the other refs? They were no better,they just stood there and by doing nothing backed the call.

AA team" and bad officiating does nothing but take away from what the kids at Russell have accomplished this year. There is no need for whining and complaing or pointing a finger at other reasons. Russell had great football team that happen to lose to another great team. Nothing takes away from what Russell has accompished. (except for having excuses made)

I agree .. Devils have a program ... that means they compete at a very high level consistently... Not one year wonders ....

 

Devils will be fine because , this program is sound .... Kids , coaches and community provide everything for Devils to compete year after year ... JFL is Russell/Flatwoods is as good as any in the state ... They have better facilities amd support than most varsity programs in our district ..

 

Devils will reload next year , work out the kinks and be ready for another playoff run ... How many in 3a can say that ? Can Mercer going into 5a ?

:laugh: I listened to the KHSAA broadcast bc of this very reason. Russell's broadcasters are terrible.

That is a true statement, you never know when a play starts or stops, they rarely give the score! With that said I didn't have to listen to them this week I saw it live! Man that was just about the coldest I have been! Well worth the trip, shame they couldnt pull it off. Congratulations on a great season Russell!

I have to admit that I saw some pretty bad behavior by a few of the Mercer players following the game. While most were celebrating winning a hard fought game some were taunting the Russell fans. Chest thumping and waiving directly toward the Russell side line.

Was the decision to merge so rushed that they didn't have time to change the name of the school? I thought Mercer County High School won the game.

That is a quote from one of the Mercer Co football players. The players coaches and community know they were handed a gift when they were allowed to combine two teams into one and still play down. I don't think people begrudge the fact they remained in AA as much as they are just irritated that most fans from Mercer refuse to admit that they were the reciepient of a HUGE advantage. At least that is the way I feel about it.

Nobody ever said Jackson wasn't fast. He was the fastest player on the field. But "smoked" implies that he pulled away from everyone by a great distance. In fact Frazier did stay right with him all the way to the endzone.

 

There was heart displayed. I thought it looked like he got banged up on the hit by Wills. I thought Ford looked like he was shaken up a couple of different times as well. That was a hard hitting hard fought game. I doubt that Mercer's RBs had been hit like that all year. It was a testimony to them that they kept playing as hard as they did.

 

Speaking again of heart. Josh Wills in nothing but heart. That is what football is supposed to be played like. He does not have the prototypical size for a college linebacker but some schools really need to give him a good hard look. He and Clark are just relentless. If they treat life the way they treat football they will be nothing but successful.

I think that what irritated most Mercer fans is that some non-Mercer fans refuse to admit how difficult such a transition would be. Think of trying to merge your cross town rival with your school. How would you keep from having factions develop between the two former teams? How would you keep grudges from forming between players that started last year, but may not this year, due to a player from the former "other" school taking his spot? II would imagine that when July rolled around and other teams were worried about when to practice because of the heat, or what defensive strategies to practice for that day, that Mercer Co was worried if their "team" would even come together.

 

About the quote, how many of your teams set a goal to go undefeated and/or win the state championship? Do you think Mercer is the only team to say/hope/wish for this?

 

Yes, Mercer had an advantage in numbers, but they also had a disadvantage in the situation of how to become one team. Didn't Trinity have an advantage over Ryle? Yes, I know that the current alignment puts them both in 4A, but the fact remains the same that the difference in male enrollment between those two is greater than between Mercer and Russell.

 

Oh, and by the way, Mercer is not my team. I became a Mercer fan reading all of this type of "sour grapes" threads. Great job, Titans! Congrats also to the Russell fans/coaches/players who just played the game and didn't stoop to this kind of whining. Best of luck to both teams next year.
