This has been discussed before and it's all biased.

But, here you go. 3 that come to mind are Gary Hammonds, Gene Combs, and Shawn Hall.

There's a certain assistant coach that should get a nod, but I'll not say at this time. :thumb:

Those that have been mentioned above are really good coaches from the 14th region I think.

Some that I'd like to add are:

Ashland Blazer - Jeff Wilcox

Raceland - Randy Vanderhoof

Lawrence County - Randy Keeton

Pikeville - Steve Priode

Paintsville - Tucker Howard

Rockcastle County - J.D. Bussell

Corbin - Jeff Garmon

North Laurel - Darren McWhorter

Somerset - Phillip Grundy

Southwestern - Rodney McAninch

Bell County - Tommy Greer

Hazard - John Meehan

Johnson Central - Shawn Hall

Pulaski County - Scott McAninchh

East Carter - Jeremiah Shearer

Perry County Central - Bobby Keith Dixon

Chris Varney at Powell Co. has done a wonderful job and would make this list as well.:thumb:

I would have said Lawson at Pikeville without question...But....

One would have to go with Garmon at Corbin if only due to sheeer success. He has a perennial power house down there! :thumb:

Same can be said about Randy Keaton at Lawrence. Great coach as well as a great guy!

Garmon is a quality coach but I can think of at least 5 better coaches in the 13th region alone. Head Coaches and assistant coaches.

Corbin didn't make it to the regional tourney last year. When is the last time Middlesboro or Rockcastle didn't make the tourney? Good coaches get their team to the tournament no matter what kind of talent they have.

That all depends on how tough their respective districts are.

You're right. And in this case, their district isn't too tough. Corbin got bounced from their district by a Whitley team who was ousted in the first round of region by Knox Central. Give it up for John Smith at Whitley though, he got his team to the tourney. He is also one of those coaches that I considered to be a notch above Garmon.

I would have to agree with that statement, I think if you look closely at Garmon, his forte is the preparing the field, is assistant is the baseball brains down there in Corbin.

Paul Morse from Danville can be added to this list.

What criteria or credentials should one consider in determining a coach's ability?? And, how would this process be applicable to assistant coaches?

That's a good question. I think a good baseball coach is a coach that finds success when he doesn't have great athletes. Basically, anyone can coach talent. If most of a school's sports teams are bad, but their baseball team is relatively successful, that tells me that particular coach knows what he is doing.
