Featured Replies

I just took a look at the recent RPI rankings. Pikeville has lead the state recently in all classes with the highest RPI. New Rankings have Kentucky Country Day with an RPI 0.877. Pikeville has an RPI of 0.875.

What’s your thoughts?

Here is some other teams.

Paintsville 0.755

Louisville Holy Cross 0.729

Williamsburg 0.673

Newport Central Catholic 0.669

Hazard 0.658

Raceland 0.647

Eminence 0.636

Bethlehem 0.631

I agree with seeding the playoffs, but this system needs some more work.

You would think the khsaa would have done some unpublished trial runs (for a season or two) with their system to get it right before they put it into action with playoff implications involved. I'm likely reaching a bit to expect that type of governing by the khsaa though. They're going with the fly by the seat of your pants mentality until they get it right it appears.

Pikeville has beat:

- Top 3 3A Team

- Top 5 1A Team

- Top 7 1A Team

- Top 10 3A Team

KCD has beat:

- 4 of the 5 weakest teams in Jefferson County possibly

- A bad Thomas Nelson team

- A decent but not Top 10 Washington County

Logic checks out....

The RPI is going to be used to seed the semi-final round, is that right?

If so, the RPI likely isn't designed to be "right" the first weekend in October. It's not going to be used for six more weeks. A lot of time and a lot of data to go into before it's actually used.

Relax.

The rpi calculations stop at end of regular season so playoff games won’t be factored into it. True it won’t be used for six weeks but only 4 more weeks of data will be used. Still time to change though.

I'm quite confident there are ways it can be tweaked. I mean after all, this is the first season they've used it. But people are getting all bent out of shape about something that's not supposed to be right yet.

Starts seeding in the 3rd Round after the Districts replay themselves the first two rounds.

Then re-seeds the Semi-Finals as well.

Isn't part of the calculations your opponents' opponents wins? If so, then each week adds much more data than the week before. It's sort of like an inverted pyramid, isn't it. Week one has just one game to reference...while week two has your game, plus how your week two opponent did the week before, plus how the team you played in week one did in week two...and so on and so forth. The final two or three weeks will start having a crazy amount of data being factored in, compared to the first two or three.

Yes. The three components will have new data each week until end of regular season.

Yep. If you're using RPI on October 7 to determine if "your team" could beat "my team" then you are looking at all of it completely wrong.

I'm not bent out of shape about it, it's not gonna mean a whole lot anyway since it outside of an upset or two the best teams will be all that's left when it comes into effect anyway.

My thoughts though are rather than just throwing it out there in beta form for the first time it's going to be used and tweaking it as the season goes in, they should have had a working formula from the beginning.

Maybe they do, but if I were running the model I would have tested it for at least the season prior, two seasons would be ideal. It just seems like another spur of the moment decision by the khsaa that they implemented without having a working model. That's a recipe for disaster a lot of the time.

It checks out in the comparison for KCD, but what about Pikeville having the highest RPI in the state?
