Crowds at Rupp - Hurting UK?

Featured Replies

I read an article from the Chicago Tribune about the UK/DePaul game and they mentioned the crowd. It was a passing comment, but one that made about the crowd affecting the Blue Demons. Is there any way to make Rupp more of an imposing place for opponents to play?

DePaul hung with Kentucky for most of the night Monday before the Wildcats' superior depth and firepower asserted itself in the second half of an 87-81 victory that was easily the most entertaining game of the first round of the Maui Invitational.

Memphis beat Oklahoma, Georgia Tech whipped Purdue and UCLA crushed Chaminade in Monday's other games.

"I'm hoping when we get in the locker room we'll look at each other and say why wasn't this there the first two games (both losses)," Wainwright said. "I'm really proud of how we hung with these guys. Adversity is an overused word. Our guys are healthy, they're good-looking and they're smart, so they haven't faced as much adversity as some people. But there was some tonight with the crowd and all."

Kentucky travels as well as any team in America, and blue-and-white clad Wildcats boosters filled nearly every seat in the tiny Lahaina Civic Center gym. And it didn't take them long to get revved up, as Kentucky hit the Demons with a 16-4 haymaker to open the game.

Hurting UK is a stretch, but they arent helping.

The old folks really only get up and cheer when something spectacular happens or when the other team is on a run and UK gets it slowed down in the half court and the crowd tries to get behind them. If the old folks that make up the majority of the lower arena at Rupp would be behind the team the whole time it would make a difference I believe.

...Amen, my friend.

....Yes, old people and century held season ticket holders, who are just sitting on their hands in the upper level and students, in the lower level.

Often times, the camera pans around the crowd and its certainly not, the enthusiastic, energetic and often wild, students.

Cameron Indoor Stadium instantly comes to mind, with the students and their constant motion, chants and cheering.

I wish they would fix it up to put another section of UK students courtside. Get that place a little louder particularly at courtside. Its a tough situation because we have so many fans who have had their seats for years!

The eRupption zone needs to be expanded like at Cameron to circle the lower court.

When Kentucky got off to the fast start against MV St., the camera panned the lower area and three....three people were on their feet cheering at the first TV timeout. Everyone else was just sitting there looking around as if they were waiting for their dinner check to come. I remember going to a game and seeing an older woman knitting three rows behind the UK bench. Knitting.

Her name? Donna Smith.

Not anymore. Durham's Fire Marshall put the kabash on that. They also have to sit now.

I wish that for one non-conference game a year, the university would allow general admission so that the loudest, rowdiest fans could get near the court.

Better yet, have it at Memorial and make everything free to students.

I don't know if there's any way to do this, but the students need to be closer to the court.

I've been to several games, over the years and I've sat 2-3 rows off the floor and sat in the top row, to watch Tulsa (Tubby Smith team) play UK.

Enthusiasm, begets enthusiasm and crowd excitement can create adrenal for UK and impose uncertainty, in the visitors....make some changes Athletic department and move the "old" money, up a level.

Interesting and didn't know that...thanks my friend.

The Fire Marshall must have been a North Carolina graduate....:sssh:

It's funny you say that, the guy on ESPN said the same thing.

Males you wonder, about us....:sssh:

I agree that enthusiasm begets enthusiasm and when the whole lower arena is not hopping, its hard for the students to get going too, since they are only in a couple sections down there.

Here is what I think. With UK being the program that it is, I feel like if you move some of the season ticket holders, you will still get that money because it still isnt easy to get tickets to the games. I may be wrong, but thats how I see it. They need to find a way to get students down closer to the court is the only thing I'm getting at.
