2019 Miss Basketball Finalists

Featured Replies

It happens across the state with level of competition that someone plays compared to others and most don't take that into consideration. Watched Harrison play AAU all summer and she is a really good player that has played better competition. If she played at Harrison County she would average a lot more points/rebounds etc. Not knocking Harrison they have a good team and they have had a good year. Clark plays a brutal schedule and has arguably two other D1 players on their team. I don't agree with the KABC awards and never will. Complete joke in my opinion with those 16 players only having a shot at Miss Basketball. They are players on their that aren't close to the level of other kids in other regions. If you followed girls basketball closely you would know that. They are D1 players on teams in Louisville and Lexington that are not in a weaker region that are better players, just isn't fair to them. I had a coach bragging about a kid scoring 2,000 points, which is a big deal, but if you are playing teams that are awful, and your team is bad so you play the entire game, it isn't hard to score a lot of points.

Thanks so much for posting. You said it so much better than I could have. Totally agree. :thumb:

I have followed girls HS basketball for years and I think most these girls on this list deserves this award. I wouldn’t take anything away from any of these awesome young ladies and their hard work.

Kind of makes sense. Why would Harrison be a candidate or win Mrs Basketball if she isn’t even the top player in her own region?

There is no reason other than Politics that Madison Kellione (Harrison Co) was awarded 10th Regions Miss Basketball Candidate.  You ask “Why would Hayley Harrison (GRC) be a candidate”, such a questions blows my mind to begin with, but here are a few reasons why.

Hayley Harrison (GRC)

  • Signed to Play for UT-Martin (D1).   One of the top programs in the OVC
  • Been a major part of her team going to the Sweet 16 the past two years.
  • Only Senior in the 10 Region to be selected to play over the summer on the Kentucky Junior All Star Team.  Probably why Cats Pause had her as a Miss Basketball Candidate
  • GRC is ranked Top 10 in the State and 1st in the 10th – Does this not reflect the type of players on GRC’s team?
  • Hayley Leads her team in Scoring and Rebounds which has two other D1 commit/signee (Igo and Bell) as well as an NAIA signee (Flowers)
  • Strength of schedule (This should be the most import data point).  GRC has played against 13 Top Teams In and Out of State.
    • 10 Top 25 teams in the state.
    • 1 Top 25 National team (Hamilton Heights Christian Academy)
    • 2 teams (Northwestern, IN and Oak Ridge, TN) ranked amongst the Top 10 in their respected States.
    • That’s 13 Top Teams!  Did I say that already!

[*]Record 5-8 vs these Top Teams – That’s with starters being out due to injuries!

[*]Lead her team to the Louisville Invitation Tournament (LIT) Championship game where she led her team in scoring for the weekend.

[*]Selected to the All LIT Tournament Team as well as the Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic All Tournament Team

[*]Against the 13 Top teams Hayley average is 17.4ppg

Madison Kellione (Harrison Co)

  • Committed/Signed to Play where?
  • How far have they made it in the region?
  • Harrison County is nowhere near being ranked in the Top 25 – This should speak volume of how bad their schedule is to be 21-6 and not be close to being ranked.
  • Got Beat by Paris and Bishop Brossart
  • Have only played two Top 25 teams (Mercer and Scott) and lost both.
  • Schedule if full of bottom teams from the 10th and other surrounding regions
  • She takes anywhere between 20 and 30 shots per game.

Media and Coaches should not just look at the stats and record from the surface but at who the stats/record are against.  Sorry, but neither Coaches nor players should be rewarded for playing soft schedules.  I said this before… Harrison Co had a great record last year and returned most if not all their players but yet scheduled weak competition again this season.  One can only think to pad their record and stats.  Looks like it worked…the 10th region should be ashamed!

I don’t put a ton of stock in Cats Pause high school previews. Have seen multiple times they list top players from teams of kids that graduated or aren’t even playing that season. And also didn’t Kellione make 1st team 10th region and Harrison 3rd team last year 2017-18 season? Why the expectation that Harrison was going to jump a 1st team selection from the previous season? I think it’s hard to argue the selection of Kellione as the 10ths top player this season in my opinion. She has had a very good season.

Again, Politics! Hayley Harrison led GRC in scoring, steals and blocks last year which was a Final 4 team and she was only selected 3rd team all Region. That makes zero sense! Yet she made the 10th Region All Tournament Team and She was also the only Junior from the 10th Region last year to be selected to the Kentucky Junior All Star Team over the summer which is selected by coaches all over the state.

I love how some on here always try to take over a thread. This thread is about Miss Kentucky candidates. Last I checked your player didn’t make it. Give it a rest and let’s talk about these 16 candidates And please stop bashing young ladies just because your player didn’t make the list. Most coaches in the 10th reason are very happy this is her last year.

On that note I believe Wheeler will win the award.

There are 17 finalists this year.

I think there will be co-winners this year, Wheeler and Schwartz.

I’ve seen you post before for Harrison County. Quit pretending! Hayley was called out on this thread! So I’ve only responded to those that question her! Sorry that the facts I’ve presented now have you wanting to change the conversation back. If I recall I won the last post war we had on another thread regarding meaningless stats against weak competition.

I am Madison Kellione’s Mom and I was contacted and told that I needed to check out this website because my daughter was being talked about on it. I bought this subscription to defend my child and I am not going to hide behind a fake name. My daughter has worked hard over the years to reach her goals and it is a shame for adults to tear down and try to destroy a high school students hard work. Since you are so interested in my daughters stats, you failed to mention that she has led her team in assists for several years. That is not reflective of a player that takes 20-30 shots per game. According to the most recent 10th region stats that were released today, Madison takes 13.6 shots per game. That is only 3 more shots per game than Hayley Harrison. Which proves you do not know my daughters stats. If she was wanting to “pad” her stats she would take more than 13 shots per game. Madison had the opportunity to go to bigger high schools to play basketball but she chose to remain loyal to her teammates, coaches and community. Madison has a reputation throughout all the 10th region as being a player that plays hard, plays clean and shows sportsmanship whether win or lose. I think it is a shame for adults to try to diminish everything she has accomplished in her career. Since you are so interested in where she is going to college, she has several options and plans to play basketball but she is looking for the best academic fit for her desired major. If you want to promote a particular player on this site, feel free to do it but leave my daughter out of your conversation.

I still stand behind all that I posted! How can one be a candidate for the best player in the state but yet doesn’t play against the best teams in the state nor is their team a top 25 team in the state. I’m sure you are proud of your daughter and you should be as a parent. But when picking the best player for a Region it should be based on who they have played and the quality of team they play for and stats based off that! My responses were to those questioning Hayley but welcome to BGP!

Why exactly should it matter what team they played for as you seem to state? Should Anthony Davis not be considered one of the best players in the NBA, since the quality of his team isnt that good?

You by all means have the right to talk up the girl you think should be considered. Nothing wrong with that, and definitely support that! However, there is also no reason to then also go on and try to down grade a high school girl, because you are not happy with adults and who they choose. You may stand by your statement, but you will be standing in the wrong here.

Talk up the girl you think should have got it. Criticize the adults who made the decision. Thats all good. However zero reason to basically put down a high schooler, all because you are not happy with adults and their decision. Especially when you don't even know the stats, and just make up stats like you did apparently with the shots per game. Just zero reason for it.

I have read the comments with great interest over the last few days and I have had the pleasure of seeing both these ladies play several games during their careers. Both are excellent players and more important excellent role models. On the boys side, three players were chosen Michael Moreno (Scott County), Kyle Rode (LCA), and Isaiah Cozart (Madison Central) in the 11th Region. Too bad that did not happen here with both Hayley and Madison named to the consideration for the award.

REHS hit the nail on the head, I have watched both kids play and they are excellent players. They also represent their schools and communities very well. Not to mention the students they both are. My problem is why not have 2-3 selected for a region like the boys did in the 11th. Do not kid yourself if you don't think it was an accident that 3 were tied in the 11th. All 3 of the boys in the 11th are in the top 5 for Mr. Basketball and leaving any of the 3 out would of been a crime. Same should have happened here. Both girls are very deserving and KABC could have fixed the problem. They have done it before, trust me.

Agree 100%

Has there ever been co- Miss Basketball winners before?

I think the 9th Region hurt Schwartz chance by giving Zoie Barth co- 9th region honors.
