TheDeuce Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 This always comes up at some point, so I thought I'd post. Per Brett McMurphy: Conference USA 4-2 (.667) Sun Belt 3-2 (.600) MWC 3-2 (.600) Big 12 4-3 (.571) Big Ten 5-4 (.556) SEC 6-5 (.545) ACC 5-5 (.500) Pac 12 3-4 (.429) AAC 2-5 (.286) MAC 1-5 (.167) Independents 2-1 Any surprises? Anything stand out to anyone?
Jumper_Dad Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Nothing really stands out, I was surprised that the ACC had 10 teams make bowl games. I'd have guessed 5 or 6 maybe.

UKMustangFan Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 AAC & MAC had entirely too many teams in bowl games.
TheDeuce Posted January 2, 2019 Author Posted January 2, 2019 AAC & MAC had entirely too many teams in bowl games. Which equates to too many bowl games, IMO.
UKMustangFan Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Which equates to too many bowl games, IMO. Absolutely. 20-25 should be the # of games. No one wants to watch garbage teams play other garbage teams in meaningless games.
GrantNKY Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I’ve never understood the hate on the meaningless bowl games. Nobody is making anyone watch anything. If someone wants to offer some kids a week long trip to a warm weather climate in the middle of winter to play a football game, then more power to them.

I love college football so I enjoy those "meaningless bowl games". Plus these games are for the kids, let them enjoy it.

Unless you're responsible for a Bowl Game's P&L, I'd say watch it or don't watch it, it is your call. Worrying about ratings / sponsorship dollars seems like a burden left to someone else.

Not hate, as I don't watch any bowl games that don't interest me, including the "big ones." It just downplays the achievement of making a bowl game if there are 250 bowl games to attend, IMO.
Bluegrasscard Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Its interesting that the Power-5 are smack in the middle of the list with no one above .600. One could make a case that this shows an indication of overall competitiveness between the P-5 conferences since they mostly play each other in the bowls.

You can schedule 5 cupcakes and have one good win and make some silly Bowl and people act like it matters.

I get your point that it takes away a bit of the allure of making a bowl game, but it doesn’t really bother me.

It's not really that big of an accomplishment anymore, IMO. Fun for the fans and players, sure.

I know it seems like I pick on the SEC and ACC a lot (and I do), but only playing 8 conference games is 100% a way to get as many bowl eligible teams as possible. Sure you sometimes get teams like Louisville this year who schedule 2 P5 OOC games, but a lot of times it’s 1 P5 OOC game and 3 cupcakes. There have been a ton of teams that have exploited this to pick up 1 more win and become bowl eligible. I don’t blame the ACC and SEC for doing it, but as a fan it’s important to stay mindful of the unequal scheduling practices amongst conferences if we’re to have a legitimate conversation trying to compare.
