Recently heard this is the last Shamrock Series game for the foreseeable future...Thank goodness!

 

Granted, Syracuse is much better than anticipated, when this game was scheduled...But what other big-time program is silly enough to trade a home game for a neutral site game located 3 hours from the opponent, in mid-November?

 

I think ND will take care of business, but they've got to jump on them early.

I love the Shamrock series. And most importantly players and recruits most likely like the Shamrock series and the uniforms they use for them.

I do appreciate that side of it...But it would really be a shame if they lost this game, and their spot in the playoff, due to the series.

At the end of the day. If Notre Dame is really one of the best 4 teams in the country, this is a game they should still win. They know what is at stake, they are 2 more wins away from being in the playoffs. So there focus should be at an all time high, if they can't win like that. Then probably don't deserve to make it then. Unless a lot of other teams then lose again.

I think your being a little short sided as to the intent of these Shamrock Series games. You might see it as the loss of a "home" game, but to Notre Dame there is much more to be gained than having another weekend in South Bend. I think the linked article does a pretty good job of explaining why Notre Dame has played these types of games and will continue to do so.

I'm not suggesting they don't deserve their current ranking, however I don't believe that they would beat a few teams behind them if they played on a neutral field. I have some of those ho-hum performances from earlier in the year burned into my brain. Just not buying them, to be honest.

Understandable. However those ho hum performances came from a qb who cant pass. That qb had a completion percentage of 55. Hence why some games were close and ugly because they had zero passing game. Offense has looked ten times better since the qb change. They went from a qb who couldn't complete a pass. To a qb who leads the nation in completion percentage and has played as such both at home and the road.

 

I even admitted after their first 3 games this year. I even said they are not a top 10 like their ranking said, because their qb sucked. Since the qb change though, they have looked very much like a team that should be there. Let's see if it continues this week.

I would argue the opposite is more true. Notre Dame might have the largest recruiting base in the nation. Being seen as the Catholic university in the nation gets Notre Dame in more doors than any other state loyal fan factor by far. There are 70 million Catholics in the United States. To put that in perspective, the population of Alabama is less than 5 million. Factor in their higher academic standards and I still think Notre Dame's recruiting base far surpasses any other program in the nation. It is why Notre Dame has had their own TV contract from a network for 30 years. It is why they can travel the country and fill stadiums. Please, do not poor mouth Notre Dame as if they are at some disadvantage for recruits. That is ludicrous. Any time Notre Dame isn't in the final four in football, it is a failure by the people running their program IMO.

I agree with most of your comments. Except I think you do over look how their higher academic standards, does hurt their recruiting in some ways. Some top kids that a lot of the SEC kids who can be big difference makers. Notre Dame cant even truly look at because of their higher academic standards. I heard they did lower them some since Kelly has been there. Because he even acknowledge that gave them a disadvantage.

I believe that the above quote is accurate. It is referring to the fact that Indiana is not a lush recruiting ground for football talent. It's not like Texas, Florida, California, Ohio, etc. and therefore they must find players from outside their geographic area. Look at the other teams in the playoffs as of now compared to Notre Dame. Per the rosters posted on ESPN.com Alabama has 38 players from Alabama, Clemson has 47 players from South Carolina, and Michigan has 48 players from Michigan. Compare that to Notre Dame who has 7 players from Indiana. I think that statement is dead on accurate.

 

Sure Notre Dame has an ability to recruit nationwide that is better than most schools, but things like the Shamrock Series and sacrificing home games for exposure to different parts of the country is all part of how Notre Dame maintains their ability to recruit. This is the 1960's and 70's any longer. The days of taking their pick of the elite players from all the private Catholic high schools are long gone.

Do you still not think they are one of the four best in the country? Just dominated a Syracuse team who gave Clemson all kinds of fits.
