It my mind it goes beyond hypocrisy and gets into criminal minded behavior.

Not to mention we are supposed to be Free in America.

It shows the importance of educating ourselves on the facts, particularly when we have a strong stance. My original stance was based on preconceived ideas, without much actual knowledge.

I agree on the criminal-mindedness. What was the real reason for making it a Schedule 1 drug?

I'm all for legalization on all counts, but the troubling thing for me, though it's already happening, is the increase in irresponsible people driving stoned, and on top of that texting too. I've been noticing more and more people driving erratically, and though I can't say weather it's substance or texting related, there's no doubt that there's a disturbing upswing in driving distractions, and whereas I was once skeptical about them, it's starting to make me think that properly functioning dependable self-driving cars can't get here soon enough.

There are no more people driving stoned than there are driving drunk. For the life of me I can't see how people justify (not you) alcohol being legal and not weed.

Across the board. After I studied drugs in order to teach a unit in my forensic science class, I went directly from the "no way, are you crazy?" camp to legal across the board. It is absolutely hypocritical to allow alcohol and tobacco to be freely used and to have marijuana criminalized.

So we should pass law based on something being "hypocritical"? Come on now TBG. That's the exact same as rationalizing bad behavior on other bad behavior. While in certain situations MJ has it's uses and benefits, it also has it's drawbacks and faults and has no need to be available en mass to everyone everywhere. But, alas, this is a whole other topic that's been debated here quite a bit already.

Do you think alcohol should be illegal?

Legalize drugs like heroin as well? Biggest issue with legalizing weed for me is there is no gauge on what is considered high. We have BA tests available but not limits on the level of weed in the system and the effects it causes.

Suggesting Heroin and Marijuana are even in the same Universe is silly.

I have no idea other than happy people are much harder to control.

I believe it is impossible to justify alcohol being legal and not weed.

Do you think alcohol should be illegal?

In a utopian society...probably. But then I guess in a utopian society people wouldn't abuse it, so it wouldn't have to be illegal. That's for philosophical debate I guess. Do I think we should legalize something (arguably) bad based on something else bad that's illegal? Absolutely not. Is alcohol going away? No way, too ingrained and huge to do so.

Completely agree. Other than making you feel good, there literally isn't one positive to alcohol.

Is that what I said? No.

Hey, I was in your camp before I learned the facts.

It wouldn't be legalizing it solely because of something else that's bad. It would be legalizing it because it has proven benefits.

Got no problem legalizing it for medical purposes so those that can benefit from it's use can use it.

Alcohol in small amounts definitely makes me feel good.

And from the Mayo Clinic:

Moderate alcohol use has possible health benefits, but it's not risk-free

It sounds like a mixed message: Drinking alcohol may offer some health benefits, especially for your heart. On the other hand, too much alcohol may increase your risk of health problems and damage your heart.

When it comes to alcohol, the key is moderation. Certainly, you don't have to drink any alcohol, and if you currently don't drink, don't start drinking for the possible health benefits. In some cases, it's safest to avoid alcohol entirely — the possible benefits don't outweigh the risks.

The Devil's Lettuce isn't going away either so it makes a lot more sense to get out in front of it.

How does keeping it illegal change any of this?
