March 1, 20188 yr Since we have a push in America to increase the legal age of firearm purchases from 18 to 21 it got me thinking about what should be the maximum age that "we" should allow American Citizens to purchase firearms? It is a fact that once we reach a certain age we all start diminishing physically and at some point we are probably not fit to be handling firearms and using them in emergency situations. What age should that be? The FAA says commercial pilots have to retire at 65 (up from 60 not too long ago). Should the maximum age to purchase a firearm be 65? Something else? If Dick's and Walmart and Kroger are going to set minimum ages for firearms purchases shouldn't they also set maximum ages for firearms purchases?
March 1, 20188 yr IMO, If you don't have the capacity to drive a vehicle properly, you probably don't have the capacity to operate a gun properly either. As far as a set age on that end of the spectrum, there probably isn't one. A retailer would be well within their rights if they decided to refuse to sell to persons over a certain age though. Just because someone is legally allowed to do something, doesn't mean a privately held company has to provide that service to them.
March 1, 20188 yr We can't convince anyone to limit driving when people's eyesight, reaction times, and physical ability to operate a vehicle all diminish, obviously. Not a chance gun ownership is going to change before that does. Edited March 1, 20188 yr by Colonels_Wear_Blue
March 1, 20188 yr Anyone with mental illness or older Americans with diminished mental capabilities need to be refused purchase. From past experience as a shopper,I have yet to find a Walmart employee who is qualified to decide on sight unless it's advanced Alzheimer disease. But you cannot set a definite age for senior citizens. They are the ones who fear home invasion the most. Age discrimination and the 2nd Amendment guarantees their right to purchase, especially if they possess a driver's license.

If Dick's and Walmart and Kroger can discriminate based on age against American citizens aged 18 to 20 those Corporations can also discriminate based on age against American citizens they deem too old to purchase firearms.
March 1, 20188 yr To be honest I’ve always thought it to be kind of silly that people try to act like age discrimination is an awful thing and then somehow include it in a list of other discriminatory acts like race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. It’s absurd to me. There are laws in place saying that people below a certain age aren’t fully developed enough physically, mentally, emotionally, etc. to be tobacco, alcohol, fireworks, etc. but God forbid a business day I think selling a gun to a 20 year old is a bad idea. So it’s just the government that can age discriminate?
March 1, 20188 yr To answer the question, if a business doesn’t want to sell a firearm to anyone over the age of 75 I have zero problem with that. It doesn’t mean they can’t own a gun, it just means Dicks doesn’t want to sell them a gun because they don’t think it’s a good idea.

Allowing anyone to disregard the law is opening Pandora's Box.

I don’t believe age discrimination is a real thing. At least not how I define discrimination. Discrimination to me has to be without basis. So things like race, gender, sexual orientation would be without basis. Age has a very defined and accepted basis with which to discriminate. I have zero problem with refusing service based on age. I often disagree (such as the drinking age) and I’m not sure I agree with Dick’s decision, but there is a reason behind it that usually makes sense.

March 1, 20188 yr Author Whatever age a retailer sees fit for their particular situation. For example, would you be okay with retailers setting a maximum age limit of 65 for the purchase of firearms?
March 1, 20188 yr For example, would you be okay with retailers setting a maximum age limit of 65 for the purchase of firearms? Can we set a max age on voting also? What else could we set mandatory age limits on?
March 1, 20188 yr For example, would you be okay with retailers setting a maximum age limit of 65 for the purchase of firearms? Yes. If I was older than 65, I'd go somewhere else.
March 1, 20188 yr Author Can we set a max age on voting also? What else could we set mandatory age limits on? Driving for sure. This is what I am getting at everyone, allowing aged based discrimination, no matter how good of an idea we think it is in a given circumstance, opens pandora's box for endless discrimination and restrictions on your rights as an American citizen.
